Never lower yourself to his level. Assert your dominance. Be stern but don't yell.

Put him on a leash and make him follow you for extended periods of time. Use simple one syllable commands.

You are the boss, let the dog know that. Dogs respond to the alpha. Be the alpha.

When you start training for tricks or other things use kibble or some other treat. Give it only when they do as you ask.

a new puppy...mix of a lab and a pit...listen to me and obeying.

This is why I always recommend adopting an older dog(passed this puppy nonsense) from a shelter. But people always say "I want a new dog who's not all messed up" only to fail at puppy training and end up taking their dog to a shelter because it's...all messed up.

--end rant.

Take a basic obedience class. These are to train you more than your dog. If you keep a consistent routine and anct as the head of your pack, he will fall in line...eventually, but you have to stick with it.

Have you ever heard of Cesar Milan, aka the Dog Whisperer? The guy is a dog fanatic and probably crazy, but he has some good techniques. The most important one is that the alpha never looks at pack members in the eye for more than a second. If you look your dog in the eye, look away and turn your head. He will instinctively see you as the alpha. The more you get on his level, look in his eyes, and play with him, the more he will want to be your equal.

The other helpful thing we got from this guy is the dog nip. You use your hand like a dog jaw and give a little nip on the neck for discipline. Dogs instinctively understand it. Just don't over-use it.

You can be affectionate with him a lot more, later. But for now, be the alpha dog.

Threaten the dog with a lawsuit.

LOL.

dont leave your dog at home all day. find some time to walk him.

give the dog something to do. a bored dog gets into trouble... well... because he has nothing to do.

my dog loves beef jerkey.... hahah... give rewards for them listening to you.

the simple commands to teach as a puppy:

sit
down
paw
come

dont repeat the command. doing this causes the dog to remember it as "sit sit sit sit sit sit" instead of "sit"

if they dont do it the first time then they dont get a treat.

yelling "cookie" or "treat" always gets them to come. ;)

we manage to run 6 sheep dogs at the same time to control 1200 sheep

mostly the old dogs train the new ones but we remain the ultimate leader

our dogs love to go and find an old dead sheep to eat and roll around in then they drag a leg back onto the lawn and expect a pat for their work

You have to be dominant! Control what the dog can do and what it can't do. Grab that chewed shoe and rub it in it's face until it gets pissed. Then do it some more, dogs learn by example. Once he figures it out that chewing something is going to cause him stress then they will stop. Control!

Leashes work good to get the dog used to following you, keep it short like 1 foot long. Don't let the dog run off with your arm attached.

Your voice is the key, dogs pick up on nice voices and angry I'm going to beat you voices. You don't have to elevate the volume, just change the tone.

Sometimes in the beginning it's tough love. But once trained it doesn't have to be tough anymore, just love.

if you're guna punish a puppy you gota do it while its doing something wrong. 5 seconds later and it'll have no idea why you're yelling at it
