from what i have read regenerative brakes can't actually bring a vehicle t a complete stop, so he will still need normal brakes, plus regenerative brakes require a special controller.

as long as your not going too fast, and your vehicle doesn't weigh much, they should work just fine! a 5/8" live axle seems a bit thin to me, but maybe not.

i know it seems thin. I went with DOM tubing. The shop i bought it from said its strong enough for me. Its just a 1000watt motor

And JUST a 1000w motor??? And r97, your right, they can only slow the kart down. The only thing I can think that you'd need are some diodes and someway to limit amperage.

You'd better put a lot of support bearings on that axle. And that's a beefy motor for a small vehicle!

reasonably sized motor yes. seems so tiny compared to the 5000-6000w i wanted to run on a go kart! lol, but that would be a LOT of power.

but yea, at least a 5/8" solid shaft supported on both ends, i would personally go with 3/4" if its a live axle. if the axle isn't supported on either side of the tire(s) i would consider a 1" shaft

i plan on mounting the axle to my frame with pillow bearings. the wheels i have use a 5/8 hub so thats why the 5/8 axle rather than buying new hubs.
