i bought this gutless yerf dog from craiglist....it came with what I think is a comet 20 clutch. Its got a 5.5hp tecumseh, with 18" tires and a 6:1 ratio chain setup. I believe there is something wrong with the driven clutch, when I ride, or try to, the belt gets sucked into the clutch and I'm going nowhere fast. I took the clutch apart, installed the correct "blue" spring and cleaned and lubed, and still have the same problem. I tried a TAV2 but couldn't get the axle sprocket to clear the adaptor without lifting the engine up, then it would derail the chain due to the engine flexing the motor plate. I'm at a loss on what else to do.
Anyone know how a single seater yerf dog would have been setup? Its about to go back to craigslist.....

forgot to include that, its got a new belt sized for a 7" driven with a 7" span for a 20 style clutch (beveled on both sides) I also borrowed a centrifical clutch to try, it sucked just as bad.

Well the engine is a little on the small size especially if you are a big boy.

are positive on the clutch model? it may have the wrong belt. put the rear on some blocks and see what happens with no load.

well, not totally sure on model, just guessing based on engine and pulley shape. If I pick up the rear end, the driving pulley closes and picks up the belt, the driven pulley is acting like its stuck open. I noticed one side of the driven is bolted together, the other side is riveted.....I'm thinking someone may have screwed around with it. also not sure it its not a max torque converter. the driving pulley does have "Comet" stamped on the cover though.

I also thought about the engine size, but a guy at the shop that's about half the weight of myself tried it, and the same thing, the engine revs up, the driving closes and the cart "Slowly" moves forward. its like I have to push it down hill, hop in and go. it sucks when your on flat land.

I cant take any video, my other camera is in the shop getting work on (doesnt like water for some reason) both of those above pics are at rest with the engine off.

the belt is supose to be lose on these. i have the exact same go kart with a stock 5.5hp engine. i think you said the belt was beveled on two sides but it is should only be on the side facing away from the engine, the other side should be flat. try a new belt. mine wants to pull wheelies and does 30-40mph easy

His is a 20 series, and is symmetrical (meaning the belt should be beveled on both sides), i know how a CVT works and i know that they are supposed to be loose but that one looked a little extra loose.

my ody's belt is about that loose. can't tell for sure but the inside drive sheave looks near flat(asymmetric). it may be a 20 series outer and a 30 inner? i also can't tell where the sprocket for the driven is. maybe a new sprocket? QUESTION will the tav work in that manner? driven clutch reversed. seems it would change gears quicker and wearout the belt quicker.

you have the driven pulley installed backwards, the springs should be facing away from the motor. look at the first pic, its showing the springs facing the motor. turn the pulley around should solve the problem

You're installed backward, must be a really old 20 series, my 20 series driven spring housing looks a lot different then yours. Or maybe yours is newer and mine is older. Who knows.

If your engine plate is flexing check all the welds underneath it. I had some snap which caused my chain to pop off non stop. Reinforce it with some steel tubing running perpendicular to the 2 tubes that support the mount.

I'll agree with t0x1k and pilauboy, your driven is installed backwards, also, if you've got clearance for it the small chain sprocket should be installed behind the driven, as close to the bearing as possible -- hanging all the way at the end of the jackshaft as it is will cause no end of grief, you'll be bending jackshafts, spitting chains and eating up bearings from all the extra leverage. Should look like pics below. Note the red line in the second pic, you should get the back of these two pulleys lined up as close as possible, just lay a ruler across and space out the rear pulley with washers if required.
