help with a carb problem

Ok, I'm continuing on my 11 hp project cart, and have spark now, and rebuilt the carberator on my 11 hp briggs and stratton magnetron motor. Now It didnt start due to what I think is a problem. Kind of hard to explain but i'll try----
The intake baffle shaft seems to have a little play side to side and has a bad vaccume leak there and as I pull the engine over some fuel actually shoots out from the shaft by the stop screw on it. Is there suppose to be some kind of gasket or Oring there? The engine came from the garbage so who knows whos been tinkering. Thanks

I assume you mean the shaft that your throtle butterfly is mounted on? If so, then they usually don't have any kind of gasket of o ring. I always coat the shaft with some grease, helps with that problem and helps prevent more wear.

If this has the updraft style carb thier is a gasket needed right above the butterfly where the carb bolts to the L shaped adaptor.

The throttle shaft bushing....
for anyone interested this is the first time i've ever seen this problem I have, but #10 is the part that I think is bad on my carb....

so its leaking from the blue or the red in this picture

leaks from the red box in that picture
that round ring is a brass ring you press in there and I researched it and is commonly worn out and causes a vaccume leak.

I wonder if thats what is wrong with my briggs 8hp carb. Those carbs suck anyways.

Those old updrafts kick ***, you cannot flood one.

updrafts are terrible Kenny. Worst design ever. Thats why its ancient technology.

this is an old post going but I finally rebuilt the carb and it is running but not quite correctly. I think its something to do with the adjustment screws on this updraft carb. I got it to run but with a high rpm with the screw on the bottom of the carb. now there is another screw on the opposite side of the lower one up higher. is that another adjustment screw? this is the first time i've ever worked on an updraft style carb.

You only have 3 screws, idle stop, idle mix (screw up high) and high speed mix(screw on bottom).

anyone have any advice on how to adjust them and get this thing running correctly?

Run your mixture screws in all the way and then back them out two turns.

Crank it up and listen on how it runs and adjust accordingly.

I believe on them old carbs turning the adjustment screw in leaned it and backing the screw out richened it.

When you rev it up, listen for a bogging of your engine, if you hear it, you are not getting enough fuel so richen your mixture.

If it cranks up, runs a minute and dies and you smell a bunch of gas or the plug is wet,
lean out your primary running tube by turning in the screw.

I may be wrong, i have only worked on one of these carbs before.

Please correct me if you see anything wrong, that way i can learn to.

wow, my 8hp updraft has problems too. the airfilter is missing i think and all there is is this black square pipe. it runs very low rpms with the thing off, and it runs ok with half choke. i havent rebuilt it or anything ever.

*sigh.*

maybe i will buy a rebuild kit, but i need a starter motor too, and those together are 90-100, and i bought the thing for half that.

Don't feel left out. We hate those suckers due to the difficulty to rebuild without an ultrasonic cleaner.

lol, do you have any idea how to open them up? problems, problems.

i took out all the screws and pulled the 2 halfs apart, and it wouldnt open, and i dont want to break it! the only thing that happened was disgusting green gas came out of where the gasket is.
