A few years ago I got the kids a nice Carter Bros go kart. This year I decided that we were going to upgrade the motor so we can go faster. Here are my questions, currently there is a 6hp Tecumseh engine which I will be replacing with a Powermax 13hp electric start. I am running a Comet 30 series that I will need to upgrade. I was looking at the 40 series but want to make sure I get the most out of this motor. I've also been doing some reading about the sprocket sizes and want to make sure that the cart will actually benefit from a bigger motor. Currently it looks like it is a 5 ratio but according to the speed charts I have looked at it only shows a top speed of 37 mph. Is this accurate? Also anything else that you can think of to change would be appreciated.

I have used those calcs and I think it’s hard to get anything more then a guess when using the Comet Torque Converter clutches. The comet changes the gear ratio, which changes the rpm of your jackshaft sprocket. With the calc and my kart I get:

Wheel Dia = 16
RPM = 3600
Axel Sprocket = 54
Jackshaft Sprocket = 12
TOP SPEED = 38

Which I know is wrong because I have a speedo that is pretty close to nuts on and I had it up to 49 yesterday before I ran out of parking lot. (I need to take it over on the runway behind my house and romp on it)

I'm sure with the Comet it can be calculated more accurately but I haven’t looked into it myself. I just installed a cheap speedo and tweaked it using my father’s gps. Its go kart good.

Ok I just ended up getting a Honda clone 11hp with electric start off of Ebay. No I am looking for a Comet 40 series. Will this be adequate for this engine? Will I get the most out of it. Would appreciate any feedback.

Thanks.
