Help needed please

Hi people im in need of some help and really hope someone can help,well here goes.
I have a gx160 honda kart which is having trouble starting. I am getting a spark and have cleaned out carb with carb cleaner.
If i try starting it with the air filter off it starts but revs real high and i have to have the choke on what could it be?

I too have a gx160.... you need to take the carb apart and clean it properly. Give it a good clean and she will purr like a kitten.....

Thanks for the quick reply,well just went out there and tried starting it with the air filter on and it started on first pull but then dies more or less straight away. Any ideas/

Still the same .... carb needs to be taken apart and be thoroughly cleaned. Your air/fuel ratio is incorrect....

Okay pal will clean it again tomorrow also pal how do i reset the idle screw the plastic black one,how many turns out from fullyn seated/

just to add would stale fuel cause it to start and then cut out straight away?

Thats what caused the dirty carb... The liquids in the fuel evaporate leaving the solids,that jelly crap that then dries and causes more problems.....
Ive had to remove,disassemble ,clean,and reinstall the same carb 3 times in one day ,I kept missing SOMETHING..... it happens....

Go buy a welders tip cleaner, from Harbour Freight or the like... Great to get in all the little holes. I use a can of starting fluid(ether) to remove the crud from the outside and inside. 80-90% rubbing alcohol works good too. Use an old tooth brush to clean the outside. If you have an air compressor, use some air to blow through everything, just dont crank it up to 150psi.....

Jim, they don't have Harbor Freight stores in the UK; the closest match I can find just reading British tractor magazines would probably be the Sealey chain....

Yeah , i figured that,thats why i ended that sentence with .... "or the like". LoL. I keep hearing Princess Auto and all i can picture is a parts store for women,selling ribbons and whatnot. ...

Hang on guys, maybe you all missed something; it revs its nut off with no filter but barely runs with the filter on; that tells me the filter is clogged, I had the same problem with my ride-on; clean or replace the filter, depending on how bad it is...

Also, no amount of cleaning will change settings like idle speed or idle mixture; wind out the black plastic idle screw with the filter off & the engine running; does that change anything?

Well, IF he messed with the idle screw, thats MOST likely why it revs so high. Would also explain hard starting, being that its sucking in too much fuel at start up?

Na didnt mess with idle screw i was just asking as got a new carb coming and just wanted to make sure it was set right as it will need fine tuning. The fuel has been sat in the kart for about 3 and a half weeks without running as forgot to drain before went on holiday, so im thinking its that as it never had any trouble starting before went on holiday.
I have drained fuel just waiting on new carb hopefully will fix it. Nice one for all ur replys much appreciated.
