So I picked up this little gem and paid too much but who cares. It was cobbled together with time screws, wing nuts, cut deep well sockets for spacers and popsicle sticks literally....REALLY!

I’ve put it back together with better parts and pieces. Anyone know what this is? Maker? Chinese knockoff?

Anyways, do these need chain tensioners? I have a 10-37 combo but the clutch slips going up hills. I’m thinking I need a much larger rear sprocket. Thoughts?

Ya, going to need a new larger sprocket for sure.. Around 60t..
Lets see some pics of the drive side, thatll tell for need of tensioner.

50cc Chinese mini chopper. Always wondered if you could squeeze a 212 in one....now I know.

Here are 2 pics of the right side. This 37 is definitely too high for my fat ***. I’ll run into a few problems going to a 60 tooth but none are insurmountable.
First, I placed the motor 2” to the right from where the old motor was mounted. The previous owner had the motor at an angle aiming the front sprocket towards the back sprocket. By moving the motor to the right side I got them to line up better but not perfect. I lost the chain on my test drive yesterday.
When I go to a bigger sprocket my clearance from the frame is going to be nonexistent. I can space the rear tire further to the right but other adjustments will have to be made.
The chain is tight as it is so a 60 tooth I will probably have to move the motor back a little or add some chain.

How much slack should be in one of these chains?

I have a similar chopper, I got it in it's original state (minus the proper tensioner) with the 50cc 4spd. Here's a pic of the stock tensioner setup, don't mind the idler sprocket I grabbed it out of desperation! Lol. It's supposed to have a roller instead, the tensioner itself could probably be made out of a piece of scrap metal and a power steering/alternator tensioner from a Hyundai Accent, Toyota Tercel or another similar econobox.

A tensioner like in the 3rd picture could work also I'm sure but the roller was stock. 1/2" - 1" of slack on the top chain should be in the sweet spot.

Thank you, I’ll weld in a vertical support and rig some type of tensioner on it. I have an extra chain so I’ll grind off the nubs and make it the right length. Otherwise I would have to move the motor back.

I just realized that the bolt tensioner on my chopper looks like a dirtbike rear wheel chain tensioner which should be cheap and easy to find! Good luck and keep us updated!
