Hey guys I'm new to the site, just picked up my first go-kart yesterday and the guy said it used to run but now it doesnt and he hasn't had the time to fix it. So i said hey might as well make it my summer project. Well, I know the motor is Briggs and Stratton, I am just curious if anyone can give me any more information on it. I cannot find any part number/model number on it. I've looked everywhere. Theres no pull start on it, just uses a rope. But i want to buy and put a Pull Start Recoil on it. Heres the kart/motor pictures

You may have to take one of those thin, sheet metal sides off and the model number can be behind them. Thats where i found mine for some reason

Ide say its a B&S 5hp, you may be able to find one in a scrap yard and get the cover off it... You would want to make sure it looks the same, as I have found out the hard way :D

Nice kart too!

I'd hafta say Briggs 5HP. You need a 'new style' recoil. 1000's of aftermarket parts. 98% of Briggs 5hp parts are totally interchangeable. Is there a number on the top of the head? A #13 indicates a 5hp motor.

Taking it in will allow them to properly ID it and help you find the right recoil, unfortunately, your serial numbers are most likely stamped into the fly wheel housing that isn't there. Check any attached metal sheets for numbers though.

Taking it in, where? I will check the metal sheets tomorrow. I just want it to run and have an easy pull start. Thanks for the help

If you go to the mower shop, take the motor with you so that they can test fit the recoil before you buy one or order one in.

If you have a drill and a socket that fits, you can start it that way, or a short length of rope, carefully wrapped around the starter cup two times will also work.

I know you're looking for a permanent fix, but if ya gotta ride, you gotta ride.

go to briggs and strattons website they have a whole thing on engine identification and downloadale pdf's for part numbers. You should then be able to go to any lawnmower parts store and order whatever you need.

That definitely looks like a briggs and stratton 5 hp motor

So we got it running today. The only engraving I could find was a number 13 engraved on top of the engine head. It's Briggs and Stratton for sure. I just need to find the right recoil to fit it. That will make using this thing so much easier. Also, the CVT doesn't work properly. I'm new to these things, but my friend said the CVT when it expands isnt grabbing onto the gear to turn the chain/tire.

I don't see a CVT on that cart. I see a centrifugal clutch. What's wrong with it?

Centrifugal clutch, that's what i meant to say =/ llol.

When I press on the gas, it doesnt really engage, takes forever for it to get up to speed. Like literally 2 minutes of driving until it is finally speeding up. When I'm at a dead stop and i ease on the gas and then floor it, it barely moves.
