i would suggest you give your nephews a "gift-card" that says that they will each be getting a kart in about a week or two, that way you can do things properly and have a great kart to give to your nephews. also if your not familiar with engines, either set aside a decent amount of time and learn the basics of small engines, another option is a new engine or having your current engines over-hauled by someone who knows what there doing

the expansion chamber is the big black balloon looking thing that comes from the engine to up over it; the muffler is attached to it. they are normally only for 2 strokes, but here lately, i have been seeing polaris and others sticking 4 stroke pipes/mufflers on 2 strokes.

That's because they are using direct injection which makes the expansion pipe redundant because there is no unburned fuel going out the exhaust.

The person who put the expansion chamber on the briggs was certainly a bit special.....

I know for a fact that the briggs will have the same bolt pattern as the Harbour freight engine you mentioned so you can buy one of those and bolt it on.

Before you do that though, fill the fuel tanks with fuel and take the spark plug out and pour a teaspoon of fuel down that hole, replace the spark plug and make sure it's tight. Give the pull starter a few pulls and if it doesn't start within 5-10 pulls then you have a spark or compression issue.

Some companies are now using direct injection into the cylinder on 2 stroke engines with oil injection into the crankcase, the direct injection means no unburned fuel goes out the exhaust port so it means there is no need for an expansion chamber. It also means you can get a 2 stroke past an emissions test.

However, if the engines you speak of did indeed have a carb then it's probably just a low performance 2 stroke engine that Polaris thought didn't need expansion chambers.

There are also some 4 stroke motorbikes now running expansion chambers in the exhaust, this is for sound volume reasons, not performance.

yeah. search the web, and once you know some basics, get a ratchet and break that techumseh open, learn what all the parts do. since techumseh is out of business, that motor will be no good. you cant get any parts for them. well thats how i learned about engines. i ripped apart an old weedeater.

The Tecumseh will still be a usable engine, just because it's out of production doesn't mean you wont be get parts for it, you wont necessarily need parts either, all gaskets are quite easy to make and you shouldn't need any other parts for it.

But still, take that Tecumseh apart, you'l learn heaps. The trick is putting it back together .

yeah i guess. just better not crack the block or bend the crank. by the looks of it taking it apart to rebuild it is another good thing you can do. cleaning the muffler is a start. getting advanced is powerwashing the crank case.

looks like theyre both not far from being runners. I cant see a sprocket on the little one? But you should definatly take off the expansion chamber before you even attempt to start it because youll mess up the exhaust port or even crack the block with all that weight on there
