I'm trying to remove the bearings on this live axle and can't get it off. The soft plated washer on the inner part of the bearing is cracked cracked and Ive heard that if dirt and grime builds up inside the bearing along with heat, it can lock up the axle and possibly cause some serious damage to myself or other parts.
So I really need to get it off.

Tried the following:

1. Jb weld, to loosen any rust or grime. I've sprayed it pretty heavily and let it sit and soak in. Then tried to hit the lock area of the bearing of the axle with a piece of copper pipe and hammer.

2. Tried jb weld on both sides.. Nothing

3. Put a cloth around the lock part of the bearing assembly and locked on some vice grips, tapping with a hammer to try and twist it or get it to jar loose a little. Nothing happened.

4. I examined the two areas of the bearing that you put the Allen wrench type screws in and doesn't appear to be anything interfering.

IM LOST with it.. Any ideas some of you pros could throw my way?

I greatly appreciate some feedback.

Care full is right. bearing can explode when cut open.
If you wrap a rag around the outer race, hit the race off with BF-Hammer. This makes half of the work left, make sure you hit the race not the shaft. Use a punch or something also helps. Use a zip blade on a grinder or air tool to cut off the inner race, go slow.

have you tried applying heat to it? I would take some emery cloth and clean the rust above and below the bearing. Then apply heat to the axel and bearing where it is stuck.

Spray the axel with a little oil and quickly tap the bearing with a hammer.

Or throw it all away and buy new.

You could take it to a machine shop and have them press it off.

Try a few of the above options

Firstly polish the life outta the area surrounding the bearing
This is so when it starts to move it'll just slip off and won't get locked up

Then get a large tray and soak it in deisel for a day or so

Then hopefully with some Penatrene it'll come off

Otherwise try heat
Heat just the bearing inner race and try not to heat the axle
If u heat it rapidly then the heat will not transferr from one to anougther

Or my most used option
Get a bigger hammer and hit it like a man

Get a punch or a large bolt to use as a punch
Then hit it on opposing sides

Last option is to cut it off
I wouldn't worry about the bearing exploding
Unless u use oxy acetalene
The oxygen can react with the grease and cause an explosion
Well apparently
I have cut though grease before
It usually just results in burning grease

I state that cause I actually had them do so on me from cutting with a grinder, although the bearing I had cut were much larger in diameter, I think the rule still aplies.

Sid it explode into shards of metal
Or did the cutting disc catch and throw bits around

Not doubting it happened
Just wonder how

The actual balls will fly out. I'm not too sure why, it was explained to me as the race's are under a good amount of tention when they are made and with it causes them to fly out.
Bigger ones had more pop fore sure.

I'd beat it up enough to break the bearing apart, then use a cutoff wheel to go through the inner race. You can cut through the whole thing if needed just wear safety glasses.

I'm guessing you didn't mean JB Weld, probably something like WD-40 or PB Blaster right? lol

My first thought as well DeathStar :lolgoku:

Take soime sand paper and polish up the axle like Fowler said. Hammer carefully, but a shop press is your best option. You should definitely clean the axle first though,

They do snap when the pressure lets go, but never anything as dramatic as an explosion. As a matter of fact, its become almost common practice for me to cut bearings off instead of trying to press them off on some things, pinion bearings come to mind because its way too much trouble to get a bearing separator to lip in between the bearing race and the machine face of the pinion and cutting only takes a minute.

Most I have cut have been bigger than 1", most like 2" or so id, large electric motor bearings. IDK might just be bigger ones thats all.

Get a pipe that you can slide over the axle. and smack it with a hammer.. you're gonna need a long pipe though.. this will prevent you from smacking the axle with the hammer and possibly damaging it. Did that just today [not a bearing but it was stuck] Also, a good way is to stick that part in some white distilled white vinegar for about 24 hours should make the rust just fall right off! or heat the bearing with a heat gun, hair dryer. then spray the shaft with some canned air. Cold makes metal shrink, and heat makes it expand..
