Sounds like the jets may have gotten varnished up with old fuel. I'd replace the carb if it was mine. Those carbs are inexpensive.

Thanks for the reply i just put a brand new carb on there pal, do you think i need a new spark plug even though mine is sparking?
Should add that i have put fresh fuel in there changed the oil and put new carb on.

I just cant think what it could be as it stays running once its started with easy start.

make shore you dont have a air leak between the carb and the intake manifold.

If there was an air leak, it wouldn't run properly...

Obvious question (you never know) but, are you using the choke when cold starting?

Does it restart ok when hot or same problem?

My gx160 wont start unless the choke is on at start up,cold or hot. It will ONLY start with the choke on. Been cleaned too many times to still have something in it. Thats just how it is. Runs like a scalded dog after it pops to life ,with one pull. Turn off choke n let R rip......

are you shore you dont have a air leak between the carb and the intake manifold ? thats the only thing i can think of unless you dont have the jets in the carb the right way or maybe the idle is to low to start up. i just don't know.

Thanks for all your input rocketkart and i think you might be right about the idle set to low as it is a new carb i have just put on there will have to look in morning but i think that might be it as checked everything else. D o you know the idle and air/mixture settings?
Is it screw them in but not to tight just so there seated and then 2 full turns out? Is that correct on both screws?

JUST A THOUGHT...... you just put on a new carb IIRC. Are you sure you put the gasket, between carb n engine, back on correctly? I put it backwards once, it would start with spray and ran like crap.

For the air mix screw,1&1/2 turns out is a good baseline. The idle is up to the engine. There is no set number of turns for the idle screw. Have you tried to hold the throttle open just a hair and try starting the engine? If you get it to start, hold the tbrottle open and turn the idle screw till it will keep engine revved up. Then back off the idle screw till the clutch wont engage.

... the issue is cold starting?... if so... I had an issue w/ fuel pushin past my float plug(raised the fuel tank too high... caused too much pressure). What I found out was happening was the fuel was saturating my plug... causing it to not fire properly(until dried out... either by finally starting or enough pulls w/ the chock open, no throttle). I noticed a very lil wet spot below my carb against the block(lil black plastic plate). Not sure it the plate was put there to identify a fuel leakage outta the carb... but thats how i identified the issue. I lowered m fuel tank and vwala... no more leaking/flooding.

... just an idea...
