hey! im new here. Was gifted what seems to be a manco 285 about a year ago. finally tearing into it. pretty excited. thanks for anyones help along the way!!

this has been worked on a few times it seems over the years. is there anyway to identify exactly which model i have?

With the tall spindles, it could have started off as a 285. Not enough left to tell for sure now. Doesn’t really matter anyways most parts are generic and available almost anywhere. To the madness!

Is that all the parts you have? It would have had a positive ID decal on it right in front of the seat....
Probably long gone before you got your hands on it. Did the previous owners have the receipts and the owner's manual?

We know It's a Dingo, one of the early ones on account of the cage-over-engine and not the later full cage.
So, judging from the paltry info that the manuals provide it could be a:

285
285-01
285-04
285-207

Pretty sure this was a 285 produced strictly in the 1980s, might have been made in 1985 or so. They went to the full cage in the 1990s as best I can tell.

Some time around 1997 they introduced their new rear axle that was machined from hexagon shaped bar stock instead of round bar stock. All the associated parts had an "H" suffix added to denote that they were hex axle parts, such as "3941 Axle Bearing" replaced with "3941H Axle Bearing." -- Added for trivia.

Shouldn't these tubes butt up against one another end-to-end?

There is also a strap missing for the seat bottom to bolt to, actually 2 of them. The rear axle looks like it is from the bigger 8hp model.

Wow, keep that on the kart. Shows its pedigree which means it is a Sears fun kart. Manco-made but sold by Sears and often with unique colors and features.

Technically yes, but that's normal for Manco.

Found the earliest appearance of the Manco Dingo, aka the Sears "Dune Kart" in the 1982 Sears Spring Summer Catalog.
For a few years they offered only the Orange Krate, the Silver Arrow and the Lime Limo, then in 1982 things exploded a bit. . .

Speaking of the Wishbooks, I looked and looked and didn't see go karts and minibikes listed in the Christmas catalogs (unless I missed one). The wise men back then seem to have preferred advertising them as spring and summer fare only, and a few fall-winter times too as proven in post #10. Marketing, eh? It's a S C I E N C E.
