Hello everyone,
I have been lurking for a while now and enjoying all the fine posts on the site. There is a ton of great information and some good back and forth friendly banter which adds some good character to the site. Not to mention all the awesome builds on here.
Two weeks ago I bought my first go-kart project. I told the wife it is for the kids, really, it is
I've always wanted a go kart from when I was a little kid, never got one. Had a three wheeler for a period of time, and then was crew chief for my fraternity go kart team back in college.
However, my knowledge of karts was little and didn't get expanded the way I thought it would being crew chief. We basically had a kart that was in the fraternity for years and to race it we simply had to tune the clutch, put new tires on it, gas it up and go. So, no researching new parts, hubs, bearings, steering, etc. Fast forward 20 years and I have the families first go kart project and its time to put the learning caps on.
I am a big tinkerer and would rather build something than buy it. That has gotten me in trouble many times and also resulted in a lot of partially completed projects, oh look something shiny...
Reality set in early on this endeavor and as much as I wanted to start from scratch building a kart, I decided to buy a kart with at least an "ok" frame and the steering linkages in place.
So the big plan is to get the kids involved, as a summer project, tearing down the beast, cleaning it up, painting it, reassembling and then driving. My hope is they get to help pick out parts and turn some wrenches so they start to build a base of mechanical aptitude.
Of course, the ultimate goal is to have a pattern to use to build a kart from scratch so we have at least two. Which means...RACING!
We have some land and live close to the end of a dirt road with few neighbors. So that lends to building a track for friends to come over and play around on. Gotta have dreams man!
Ok, that’s it for the intro. I'll get to posting some pics soon.
