Hi guys, new member here!
I do not own a kart but I want to get into it.
My wife and I recently had a baby and because of that my wife is requesting that I sell my beloved motorcycle (2007 Kawi 650R). I did not agree upon the first request but ultimately relented. I plan on using the funds from the sale to purchase a kart or karts.
I grew up on a grape farm in western New York so I had plenty of land to play with. When I was a kid I was gifted an old reclaimed mini bike that I road all the time until it died. As I got older I'd take out our utility wheelers (Honda Fourman and now Rancher). I rolled the first one twice!
Anyway, late last year I had the benefit of being invited to a friend of my wife's house. Her husband had built his own dirt oval in his back yard and acquired several race karts from a local track that had gone out of business. It rained bad that day so we didn't race for very long but it was fun while it lasted and it got me thinking.
Recently I've been thinking more and more about getting a kart and in my preliminary research I found this site: http://www.mxk.com/
They're located within 30 minutes from my house which I thought was great news and could be a great resource as I venture into this new hobby.
My first question is where do I start? I figure I can head over to MXK and talk to the proprietor and get an idea but I thought I'd take as much advice as I can get and since I start most research online, I figured this board would be the best place to start.
Some info about me and my intents before you ask.
1. I don't expect to get much more than $2500 for the bike so that's my max budget now.
2. I've done minor maintenance and modifications to cars/bikes but I don't have a lot of experience wrenching so my skill level is probably on the low end as far as building/repairing goes.
3. I'd really like to have a kart (or two
) to keep at the farm for use during the summer. We usually get a lot of family and friends and I thought it'd be a great to have a couple karts for people to run around with.
I'd like a race kart too but I don't think it'd get as much use right now as the rec kart would. Can I have both?
So where do I start? Do I scour CL for an old beaten up kart? If so, what do I look for? What do I avoid? How much should I spend?
TIA!
Sam

you came to the right place!
$2500??? You know how many karts you can buy and fix up for that much? Quite a few, if done correctly. Yes, scour CL for beaters, either for parts or to fix. You can end up with a couple for all purpose/ mild off road and a couple for "racing". And still have some cash left over for goodies.....
