hello there i'm glad i found this forum well i've decided to build a fattired bike with a 16hp honda clone a comet series 40 1" bore 10 tooth at jack shaft and a 60 tooth rear sprocket my ? is for my size weighing 360lbs my self i;m trying to build a cheap atv and looking for more power than speed is this sprocket ratio adaquite enough for steep terrain? looking for something a poor mans rokon sort of thing any help or idea's would be great thanks.

I personally would gear it lower, maybe 7:1, or 8:1. This is not the sort of thing you want big speed out of. The difficulty here is that there's only so big you can go on the rear sprocket before it's too big. In order to gear sufficiently low, you may need an additional jackshaft.

No voodoo. Clutch driven to a sprocket on a jackshaft, jackshaft output sprocket to axle. Exactly the same as if you were running a centrifugal clutch and jackshaft, except you're taking it from a CVT.

This is extra cost, complexity, and weight. But for what you're building, I think it's the answer. While a CVT is more tolerant of low-speed abuse than a c-clutch, there's only so much a belt can take. Better to gear down and make better use of the engine's revs.

That would depend on the final reduction ratio you wish to achieve. If you wanted, say 8:1...

Suppose you put a 10T on the driven's shaft- then that goes to a 20T on the jackshaft. Then a 10T on the output of that shaft to a 40T on the axle, as an example.

For 9:1- 10T on driven to 30T on shaft, then 10T on output of shaft to 30T on axle. Etc.

I got 4 ATC that will be getting this conversion next summer. I bet they would sale nice if well made. I am building them to sale them as well. They have low and high gears. So you can really play around with gearing.
