Hey all, I have been lurking around here for a short while in awe at all the cool things you can do with some steel and an engine. I guess you could say I caught the bug when I saw an old Murray go kart for sale on craigslist for $250 (after I just sold something on craigslist for $200), so I had to pick it up.

I got it home and checked around on it. No rubber washers holding the engine on, no cotter pin holding the brake band to the lever, brake recoil spring is missing, smoking clutch on idle and the thing dies when I hit a bump. I knew all this when I bought it and am not afraid of what I think it will take to fix it. Here is what I have come up with so far.

1. Going to take the engine off and put some better bolts and good rubber washers on.

2. Trying to figure out the diagram I have for the Murray cart where the heck the recoil spring for brakes go.

3. Already replaced the clutch with a matching max torque 10 tooth clutch to go with the 60 tooth sprocket. The previous clutch seemed to have the spring worn out.

4. I removed the 'oil sentry' (low oil detector) bullet-connector from the engine and now I can cart around without it dying!

I am also missing the bolt that is supposed to hold the clutch onto the crankshaft (haha, details right) and it is on my agenda to find out where the heck to get that thing.

I have never loved tinkering with engines and stuff before but I am excited to get my hands dirty and start getting my son and I into karting. My kid has always told me he wants to be a race car driver when he grows up.

Anyways, see you around!

Welcome. I have the same kart, but did a live axle conversion ( won't be doing that again ). Mine doesn't even look like a Murray that much as I used a shopping cart and parts.

The spring goes behind the metal tab and behind the spring should be a washer, and behind the washer there should be a little hole for a carter pin.

We have another member doing a restore on the same kart too.

Here is a link to his thread where I put a link to the Diagram....http://www.diygokarts.com/vb/showthread.php?t=25587 post #31 save the parts link and bookmark it.

Oh and please fill out your profile.

Just clarifying here......
The low oil sensor was shutting the motor off because it's broken, not because it has no oil right?
You do understand it has to be filled with oil?:lolgoku:
Not trying to be mean or underestimate your knoweledge, just don't want you to end up with a boat anchor (also known as your original motor)...:lolgoku:

Welcome to the forum

1. Going to take the engine off and put some better bolts and good rubber washers on.

I don't suggest that; they may reduce vibration a little but, they'll create more problems than they solve...

4. I removed the 'oil sentry' (low oil detector) bullet-connector from the engine and now I can cart around without it dying!

Good on you for figuring that out; do you know how often we get asked about that very problem?

I am also missing the bolt that is supposed to hold the clutch onto the crankshaft (haha, details right) and it is on my agenda to find out where the heck to get that thing.

IIRC, 5/16" 24tpi bolt available at most hardware stores...

When choosing a flat washer, make sure it only covers the centre hub of the clutch, you don't want it binding on the outer bell...

I have never loved tinkering with engines and stuff before but I am excited to get my hands dirty and start getting my son and I into karting. My kid has always told me he wants to be a race car driver when he grows up.

Well, everyone has to start somewhere

success!

Well thanks guys I have gotten the kart up and running quite well.

Young One:

Yes, I have plenty of oil and intend to check it manually- it is only when it turns sharply or hits a bump that the oil sentry turned the engine off!

I got the bolt from Lowes today and it fit like a glove with the washers!

I ran the kart today after fixing the brakes- it turns out that the problem with the recoil was that the kart was painted and the bolt holding the pedal was too tight. I loosened it and it sprang back just fine. I put a tank of gas through the kart today and it runs like a dream!

Next step- I got a toro mower off of craigslist for free that has a starter and I hope to end up putting the starter on the kart!

Thanks for all the advice- I never mind being told obvious things because I am a total beginning. Glad I am here where people who are knowledgeable respond! Thanks again!
