Hello from the Cornfields...

Hi, everyone. My name is Jason and I hail from a very small town in central Illinois surrounded by cornfields. I recently decided that since my son is now 10 years old, it's time to build a kart.

I've not done this before, but I have some great people and tools at my disposal, so we're going to give it a whirl. I'm still in the design phase, but have run into some questions. During my research, nearly all Google Search results pointed to this forum, so here I am

There seems to be a wealth of information available here, so I'm quite certain I'll find the answers I seek and I look forward to getting to know some of you in the process.

No, but I have a bonus of being located 20 miles from a major machine shop that has all the tools necessary -- and it's owned by family friends that have no problems helping out

Well, I'm absolutely horrible at drawing, but here is a pic that is a huge inspiration towards the finished product, although my design calls for some changes as it will be a side-by-side two-seater with a different rear wheel/brake/sprocket design:
