Newbie here. I just acquired a go-kart (not really sure of it's classification) at an estate sale. I want to fix it up and get it running for my grandkids. It is going to need a lot of work to get it into shape. I am at a loss as to what type of engine it has. I have quite a bit of experience working on Briggs and Stratton 3.5 to 7 HP engines and Honda GCV160 engines. One of the main reasons I joined the forum is to hopefully get advice in identifying exactly what machine I have and info about the engine and other components. I have attached a couple of photos of the "kart" to see if anyone can identify and tell me what they can about it as far as make/model and the engine. Thanks!!!

Unfortunately, the included pics don't really give a clear shot of the whole engine, making it difficult to ID; I realise it's a tight space but, any chance you can get a few more pics of the engine, maybe not so close up?

Thanks for the reply. Yes, I will try and get some better photos of the engine and post them.

I found a few more photos of the engine area. A couple are pretty blurry and I apologize for that.

I would hazard a gues at GY6, but the pics are still a little bit close up. Take a step back and try get the whole engine in the pic.

Unfortunately, with all of the frame surrounding the engine area it is almost impossible to get a whole engine shot. From the research I have done on the internet this morning it appears to be the same carburetor as the one on a GY6, 150cc engine. I can't find any numbers on the engine anywhere or any type of name on the frame. Also, surfing the internet of all the images I have found, it looks most like a Kandi 150GK Spyder go kart.

looks almost identical to the gy6 on my twister 150.

Anyway, welcome! My wife is from SA and I get to visit at least once a year, great city!
I know it's not an SA exclusive, but I bring my morning coffee to work in a Bill Miller's Texas Tea Bucket.

Thanks for the welcome. Bill Miller's BBQ is one of my favorites. Also I appreciate your input on the engine. The more I research the more I am convinced it is a GY6 150cc. The good thing is there is a lot of good info on the web about this engine. I am going to start with draining and replacing the old fuel, charging up the battery and see what I have as far as spark. More than likely it is a carb issue like most small engines I work on. That ethanol does a number if people don't take the proper steps to store it.

linuxman51, do you have any idea what the rubber hose I circled in white in the attached photo connects to?

That is indeed a gy6. It has a 2 bolt valve cover right? I believe that is what we call a type b gy6 a little more uncommon. But still plenty of parts available.

hard to tell where that pic is from but if it is from passenger side it is a vent for the stator/flywheel.
If it is driver side it is from CVT case and is a vent also.

Call Tom at SYC ....http://www.sycpowersports.com/ he will set you in the right direction as far as parts and info.

Or for starters have a look at kid n me's stuff here http://www.knmgarage.com/ they also sell parts http://knmparts.com/ The more you read the more you learn. Plenty of youtube vids on gy6...

2SlickNick, thanks for the great info. I am reading everything I can find and watching youtube videos.

As 2SlickNick said, that's a vent for the stator/flywheel. if it is a type-b gy6 I think you can go fairly large on the bore/stroke (if you were so inclined). either way, the rest of the goods should be straight forward. They are very easy to work on, I'm rebuilding mine right now (p.o. ran it low/out of oil and got it reeaaaalllly hot)

Thanks for confirming that is a vent. Good to hear they are easy to work on. I am continuing to do research and have learned quite a bit over the last two days. Reading about a subject is great, but getting direct knowledge from people who actually own and work on these machines is great.

hah! I'm no expert by any means. I've had mine for about three weeks, but I had to learn quickly, it was locked up when I bought it and in bad shape once I got it running. I've been getting parts from this place https://www.gy6store.com (and if I'm not allowed to plug someone else's business I apologize), good people to talk to on the phone as well.

I'm about halfway into the rebuild and waiting on more parts, but so far it's really easy if you're mechanically inclined.

The engine I'd can be found on the case, just above the driven clutch. It's by the rear mount. Some of them it's on the bottom left side. You do have a gy6. The engine number is gonna tell you what parts you need to work with your particular engine. Go to scooterpartsforless.com and they have a list to explain how to get the number, and what it means. I just did a ton of searching for my engine, but it's a 90cc 2 stroke..... Jog type engine.....
