looks like a great source for tips and tricks with some very knowledgeable members; wish i fund this resource when i had my first go-kart which brings me to my posting now...

after 15 years i have my old go-kart back !!!!

i had sold it to my uncle whose children used it and have now outgrown it and prefer atv/dirtbike. figured i could fix it up some more and use it again myself or have my kids use it...

pictures attached; its rough but durable and clearly needs some work!

he tells me that it needs a tank for the break fluid/hydrolic brake that he added but not 100% sure what is required; any feedback? you can see where it should mount in one of the pictures (at least according to him)

edit: for those interested the engine is either 8hp or 10hp honda also have a spare 3.5hp honda for hopefully another go-kart should i find a frame

Welcome to the forum.

I'm not sure I see the point of the jackshaft, the two sprockets appear to be the same size, cancelling each other out... Am I wrong?

A fluid reservoir can be found on an old motorbike, check your local junk yard

you may be correct in regards to the jackshaft; i picked it up today and power washed it and havnt gone any further. when i purchased it originally it had zero bottom end power (if memory is correct it was going from clutch sprocket > 60+tooth sprocket on dead axle); took it to a family friend and he added the jackshaft. at the time it made a huge difference but possibly isnt required (hoping this forum can shed some light on such topics)...

in regards to the fluid reservoir can you possible find any pictures so i know what i am looking for?

I think the sprocket with the chain on it has at least 1 more tooththan the one next to it. The diameter of the hub and the sprocket itself appear to be a little bit bigger. The rreservoir is just a small plastic tank that connects to that hose.

The reason you had no torque previously was probably because you had a 12T clutch going to your 60T axle sprocket. That would give you a 5:1 ratio which is too high for your kart. If you had changed the axle sprocket to a 72T it would have been much better. I would leave the jackshaft as it is and maybe play with the sprocket sizes to get the best ration. Count all the trrth on all the sprockets and post here so that we can see what you are dealing with

Welcome to the forum!!

i did a quick check tonight appears to be the following setup for gearing

clutch 10T > jackshaft 12T > jackshaft 12T to axle 30T

also checked and engine is GX240 which I believe is 8HP; best place to get replacement parts for this in Canada / Ontario? In need of new pull start assy

...Reinforcing my previous comment...

The jackshaft is currently doing nothing; you need to increase the size of the JS in sprocket or remove the JS altogether & get a bigger axle sprocket

Welcome to the forum. These guys have you well on the way to getting you sorted out. Ontario is a pretty big place- wanna narrow it down a little?

the gearing as it is currently setup is how my uncle had it. i have never used it in its current state. last time i drove this it had different gearing and was over 15 years ago :)

located in London, Ontario

I am checking with Mid-City Honda not sure of any others.

To confirm previous suggestions which of the two sprockets on the jackshaft should I change?

the one from the clutch or the one going to the drive axle?

thanks!

The sprocket that gets chained to the clutch needs to be substantially larger- at least twice it's current tooth count.

There you go. Spot on!

thanks currently working on putting in a 30t to replace the 12t

anyone happen to know the proper bolt size/thread for the gx240 engine to bolt on the clutch? i have been checking through these forums and various google results but cant seem to locate anything that specifically says the proper size bolt/threads

also was able to get the pull start fixed without replacing anything. where the spring connects inside was worn on an angle and causing it to slip/never keep any tension so a little grinding and we are back in action. typical honda engine even being 20+years old and sitting for 2years started on third pull.
