Hello from Lilburn, Georgia, this is Steve. Civil Engineer during the day and amateur woodworker, metal worker hobbyist in spare time for which there is never enough time…until I can get rid of the day job…. Haha.
Just wanted to say a quick “hello” to the group.

I started the original Shredder go kart about 10 years ago, it sat for a while, now finally got it out for a test ride two weeks ago….and making adjustments the next few weeks. Primary adjustment to make is figuring out why it runs wide open without giving it any gas……I may have it boiled down to either a broken or absent idle/air intake screw on the carburetor for this new 420 cc Predator engine. Got a new carburetor coming next week.

I’m definitely looking forward to getting this safe for kicking up dirt on the trails soon!!

Welcome.
You say new engine but talk like it's broke already.
Did you remove the governor?
How is the throttle linkage?
If governor is still in then try loosening the nut on the throttle plate so it can return. Is there a return spring?

Thanks for the welcome and the thoughts!! Yes, funny, I bought 8 years ago and it stayed in the box 6 years or so before I was ready for it (about a year ago). Took a new job about 8 years ago that took focus away from the kart.

The governor already had a spring tensioning it the other direction taking it out of the equation….kind of odd but it wasn’t governing anything which is good. Turning that screw did nothing.

The adjustment screw on the carburetor (circled in red below) was actually missing, or rather it looked like something we recessed in the hole and there was what seemed like a hardened material over whatever was recessed. Wondering if if was broken. Again, that was odd.

The throttle linkage seemed straightforward but after your inquiry, I need to make sure there’s not some other limit screw tied to the throttle arm other than the governor.

I am just assuming that since I can’t adjust the carburetor air intake, that might be the problem.
It’s a standard 420 cc/13 HP Harbor Freight Predator engine.

Yep, I’m 6-6 and he’s now 6’-4”….we modified the plans for our height! We needed to clear the shop to make room for our next project, mini-jet boat (which justifies an upgrade for the welder for aluminum!). Not planning on that project to take 10 years… haha

It's snowing here. Also referred to as armageddon.

They likely seeded the clouds with an aeroplane and sat back with a bowl of popcorn. Southerners absolutely freak when it snows, especially in areas that only get snow once per century.

On that note, those Youtube winter driving accident compilations are fun to watch. 🚗💥🚙

Well, it snowed. Then every night for 4 nights it got below freezing. During the day it has been 40's and warmer. During those 4 days many people were literally afraid to leave their homes. I have grown to see the humor in it. Fortunately it has not inconvenienced me.
