Hey Everyone!

I'm new here, but I live out in Surprise, Arizona. I have a lovely family and I currently work in the Project Management industry. I am kicking around the idea of building a go kart with my step-son as a "bonding" activity. I've never built one before, nor have I welded, etc. However, I'm a pretty smart guy and I learn quickly. I think it would be a ton of fun for both of us as a trial-and-error task.

However, if I were to do a garage built go kart, what advice would the community have for me? Are there some very simple plans I can pull from that might help me get started? Any advice from the pros here??

Your best bet for a first project is to recondition a kart that has been trashed, it will be more economical and less likely for massive error. Just hunt craigslist for a few weeks and see what you can come up with in addition to garage sales and asking people you know. Karts are everywhere, friends, relatives, co-workers. You never know where you might find one someone just wants rid of.

After you have your project just post pictures and several people will answer your questions from different levels of knowledge and angles giving you ideas to work off of.

Welcome the the forum. That's good advice from Blaz. Reconditioning a kart is lots of fun, and makes for a great family project that has a shorter road to completion.

:iagree: My auto tech teacher bought a manco 2 seater kart with a TAV & 6hp Tecumseh over the summer for $50. Less than $100 in parts will have it running.

Restoring a kart sounds like a GREAT idea. I've already started looking on craiglist, thanks for the advice! Hopefully everyone will be just as helpful and friendly when I run into a snag restoring one of these bad boys LOL.

Prepare to become a junkie

I was or still am in your same boat. I lurked around this forum for months as I looked around for a cart. I began to get an idea of what parts are really expensive or hard to come by. Then as I searched for karts I new what I was looking for. I ended up finding a kart with a comet tc installed that was worth twice as much as the asking price. Cheap engines are easy to come by so dont be turned off by karts that dont run they are usually the best deal. Good Luck
