just got an account because i'm the research/designer for my group of friends that want to build a set of go karts as cheaply as possible, thought this forum might help!

There's heaps of useful info here & here's a bit more:
Building multiple karts of the same or similar design will not only speed up production (once you work out one part you know what to do with the other karts) it will also keep costs down by buying multiples of the same parts

Do you have any designs/styles in mind

yes i do indeed! its based on the spider carts scorpion 3 wheel design, i want to go with the 3 wheel for a couple reasons, mostly because i've devised a plan to make it much cheaper, and probably put us under the $300 mark. heres a link to my post about it in the go kart forum: http://www.diygokarts.com/vb/showthread.php?t=19788
