Try cleaning the carb. Maybe your jets are blocked

What he said. Clean the carb, blow out the jets and all the little holes with compressed air. If it has a fuel filter clean that or replace it.

BTW i would not suggest using carb cleaner, it tends to eat away your gaskets.

I did a carb cleaning, engine started rite up afterwords. It didn't die when I gave it gas, but instead now dies whenever it wants to, wether idling or reving high. Did I not clean it enough? I didn't do too great a job, do you need to be meticulous when cleaning carbs?

You do need to be pretty thorough with the task of carb cleaning.

When it dies, will it start again immediately? After several seconds of cranking? Only after some time has passed?

Yes, it will start rite back up, sometimes on the first crank, sometimes on the 3rd, but always pretty fast.

I would pull the carb off and clean it again. If there is old fuel in the tank drain it.

You may also want to check that:

-The gas tank is venting
-The float in the carb does not have any holes
-Fuel filter is clean
-The air filter is clean

I cleaned out my carb agian and then it ran OKish. The engine idles at such a slow speed it has trouble staying running. I also switched gas tanks to one with a primer. So I primed the fuel line, and then the engine ppuffed out massive plumes of white smoke. And now I'm back to the engine dying when I give it gas.

Float was fine.
gas tank was venting
air filter is adequate
Fuel filter is non existant.

The gas tank I put in used to hold gas for my ancient two stroke outboard, but I don't think that there was enough iol to make much a difference. Were those plumes caused by too much gas in the carb? and did they somehow back fire into the carb, cloging it up agian?

There are two jets in the carb, The main jet and the pilot jet. The main jet controls 60% to 100% open throttle. The pilot jet controls the idle.

Since you said it dies when you give it gas, my guess is the main jet is clogged.

Unscrew the main jet and blow out or spray out the debris. To see if the jet is clean hold it up to a light and you will see a very small hole.

Here is a pic of the jets:

Ok, I cleaned out the carb BIG TIME. There were a million little screws and bolts that hadn't been shiny in years. I cleaned both jets, and just cleaned it ALL! I gave it an oil change(which had been put off for a year by the last owner) put on a fuel filter and upgraded to premium gas. Kart definitely goes faster now, but it still has trouble keeping up with itself when idling. I will post a picture soon and hopfully sumeone can point to me where the idle screw is.

With regards to the slow idle, did you try turning in the idle stop screw (NOT the pilot jet or idle mix screw), and if so, what is the result?

I asked if someone could point me out the idle screw so I could try it. I did adjust the idle and the choke and now it runs like a charm.

And the premium gas really does make a difference. My kart starts faster, goes faster, and idles better. Crappy gas can really **** **** up, especially that goddam ethanol ****.

Next step is to build me a trailer so I can haul my jon boat down to the river. ALL IS WELL, THANKS FOR YOUR HELP THAT I DIDN"T NEED FOLKES!!!!!! :auto:
