So first thing this morningiI put a new back tire on the dirt bike Ijust bought. I crank it up and take off down the road. Man, its pretty fast....:wai:
I get to the end of the street and lt starts to bog down then die. After MANY MANY kicks, it would only try to start. Silly me, figure carb got clogged cause i had not installed filter yet. I push it a 1/4 mile back home.... :censored::censored:I immediately pull the carb shut fuel petcock off and pull off hose. Crap! Gas is still coming out, so I turn the petcock the other way and it stops. :censored::censored::mad2::mad2::mad2::censored: The fuel was already off so i ran out of gas in carb by the end of the street. I didn'teven look to see if it was on or off. I knew iI had gas cause i just put some in...... WHAT A DUMMY....

Never done that but I think I can one up you :D I tried to start my sled without the carbs on. I checked the fuel shut off, the gas tank ( I've done that one before) then went to spray a bit of gas in the carbs, which weren't there

:wai: Done the fuel shut off trick before. When ever I am working on a engine I pull the spark plug wire. Try to fire the engine and no go. my Buddy sitting there saying do you think you should put that little black wire on the plug, maybe it will start then.

WORSE! Did it with a 2HP Johnson on a 10ft jon boat. Really hard to push back home.
I'm a carpenter by trade-tools are constantly refusing to work for me because that little black wire isn't plugged in.
And yes-done the spark plug wire many times......at least he had the plug in::mad2::mad2::oops:

The one thing i am real bad at is tuning up the car and 90% of the time i dont put the rotor back in before the distributor cap is put back on.

I completely rebuilt a 400 small block chevy from a 4 wheel drive truck once. It is a bear to get the engine lined up on the trans. The last thing I went to install was the starter. I looked up, and no flywheel, it was still under my bench!!!

I've done that! The worst engine for that is the Ford I6 crossflow engine from the late 80's & early 90's where the distributor is tucked under the intake manifold; it's a major job just to get the cap off...

Many people who owned cars with this engine couldn't understand why mechanics would charge $200 just to change a rotor button & $300 for the cap...

You had me confused for a second. Then I remembered you were from "down under"- over here those parts are on top. Tell you what buddy- next time just flip the car over before you start.
(Thank God this guy lives halfway across the planet from me-old as I am chances are I'll die from natural causes before he can get here to give me the azz whoopin I deserve. ):lolgoku:

Yeah, that would be too easy for us... The V8s are good, the dizzy is on top, right at the front, unlike the Holden V8 which ar at the back...

Lemme see if I can find a pic, that may help you understand it.

Fowler will know what I'm talking about...

:lolgoku: All good buddy, all in good fun

Edit: Found one

See that little splash of red under the hoses? THAT'S the distributor cap...

Here's one without the surrounding hardware & annoying engine bay in the way... not to mention a custom manifold

The only place worse than that would be INSIDE the crankcase I guess ;)

Back a couple of years ago when I was still doing on site machine repair, I got a call from the Cyclotron Laboratory machine shop at Michigan State University in Lansing, MI (it's the only one owned exclusively by a University in the U.S.). They had a CNC lathe that had a drive fault in the X axis, and several other companies had thrown their hands in the air and walked away from the machine.

My boss actually used his head that day, and sent me in with the tech from the electronics company we had just used to sort out a similar issue on one of the CNC's in our own shop. We get there, jump thru the security paperwork hoops, get issued our own personal radiation dosimeters, and out to the machine shop we go.

6 hours later, Doug and I have checked, tested, and managed to move the problem in any direction we want except out of the machine. Here's where it gets frustrating; just before we throw in the towel and gut the drives so we can send them back to the OEM for inspection, Doug says "let me try one more thing".

That "one more thing" was nothing more than licking his thumb and first finger, running them down both sides of the contact strips for each board, and reinstalling them. Two months later when I went back in to work on a bandsaw, the machine was running great, with zero glitches........:surrender::huh:

 Man, you can be cryptic sometimes...

Eh, I'd totally deal with that pain to get a crossflow aluminum head on my 300 I6...

I don't think that'd work, totally different block to the older style engine & these things are only 250ci. However, the same engine is still being used today with good results; google "XR6 turbo"

. Tell you what buddy- next time just flip the car over before you start.

done that before
getting a steering rack out of a wreck

put a chain though the front windows and lift with tractor
gave me loads of room to work
cant say the missus will be impressed with the new ascetics
but it did greatly improve driver head room

machinist
that's probably the first thing id have done
but my knowledge would have stopped there

we had to make a small electric car at school that was able to be programmed to a set task
something like drive forward for 5 seconds go left go right then stop at the empty coke can without pushing it or knocking it over

anyway it wouldn't accept the program
worked on it for about a week of lessons and lunches double checking my little circuit board and trouble shooting
the teacher even gave up on it

in the end i got so fed up that i picked it up and slammed in into the desk

worked flawlessly ever since
still works today
i think its just too scared to stop working

if u want to experiance a really tight ****ty job then replace the pilot lines on a D9 dozer
u are squished into a tiny area elow the drivers seat
too small the heal but nowhere to sit

the pilot lines are 1/2 dia hoses that run all over and aront the control valve

some connections are too tight to even get a spanner on them
poor 13/16 got cut in half
also being a large machine nothing is easy to undo
its all really tight and corroded

as for the have u ever done this before
me and another guy were sent to move a truck in the yard
both of us were new to the game and didn't really know what to do
we attempted to start it many times but it just wouldn't turn over
so we attepmted a jump start
still wouldnt go
the starter would engage and just stop
we cleaned all the terminals and connections
bugger the engine must be seized
turn the engine over 1 revolution
nope nothing wrong there

after about an hour of stuffing around, go get the supervisor
us "this thing just wont go"
him "does it have air"
us "dont know, why does that matter
him "um because its air start"
oh whoops , ****
awkward silence ensues
