so i am brand new to karting. i just got my first kart, simple 2 seater one wheel drive type. so i just broke something, and the kart will no longer drive when given throttle, just makes a grinding sound. It looks like a spun my drive gear and ?balancer? off the main shaft. because the engine is totally fine. the shaft just spins freely and the kart does not move. Am i even close? where would i find a replacement gear. the engine is a brand new viper 31338 196cc motor.

see pics below, i can almost slide the balancer and gear off but the chain does not quite flex that far.

Looks like you lost a snap ring. It keeps the outer drum(drive sprocket attached) from walking off the shaft.

Easy and cheap fix. Most decent hardware stores will have an assortment of snap rings to choose from.

Haha I just took off the drum and chain and, wow I can barely make out any teeth on the sprocket. Just gonna get a new clutch, it's pretty beat.

Usually when agrinding noise is heard, something is going to break or is broken.
Yep, better get a new one. Least that is broken, not the motor.

Welcome to karting. Everytime my son gets his kart out he drives it until something breaks. You better enjoy fixing and repairing if you enjoy karting!

add your location to your profile - you never know, sometimes you you might have a neighbor with a spare part! :)

also, if it's not too late - spend the extra $ and get a torque converter instead of a centrifugal clutch. you'll find yourself breaking them less, and most importantly you'll have quite a bit more torque and a little extra top speed! then convert your axle to a solid live axle for more traction. :)

The word go-kart is hyphenated because it really stands for
GOt to go work on my KART

Exactly. My son or daughter or usually both will come walking back up out of the pasture and report on what part is "broken." I don't remember working on my go kart near as much when I was a kid as I work on theirs. I guess everything was built better back then.
