At a huge risk of being completely humiliated for blatant ignorance, what is a " yagi "?
That thing you bought yesterday.
What he said. I’m trying to reliably hit a fusion repeater 27 miles away so l can talk to my homies. What i have now is hit/miss. 15 element yagi outta do it.
14.8 (claimed) DBI.

Thats an antenna right? -Or the antenna is part of it? I think some youtuber connected with the ISS using one? I could be way off here.

EDIT: Oh theres been a couple replies...
That is correct, tho not quite that simple.
Any other radio nerds here? Chime in!
l got involved with this radio stuff back in the day when we were racing.
Then we did comms for the Oregon Trail Rally.
now l’m just a nerd. Obviously not as accomplished as WTR!

Iv'e been researching amatuer radio lately. Go figure. I have 5 of those Baofeng UV-5R radios. Had CB's and police scanners back in the day. Got out of police scanners when they went digital around here. Way over my head then, but now have a huge interest in radios again.

Look up a nerd club, errr no amature radio,
Usually a bunch of old guys with nothing to do.
They can help ya with licensing, testing and teaching ya the stuff ya need to know.
For free even.
I can’t get into the CB thing cuz it’s a bit too “rough” for my tastes, but it can be fun sitting in a darkened room talking to someone on the other side of the world.

Yeah! there ya go !
Darkened room the glow of the tubes, the crackle of the radio, the sweat on your brow cuz the shack is 115 degrees, outside its 24....
In the old days playing with this stuff, (before cell phones, sat phones and the inner web), a friend and I would run phone patches to the ships returning from Vietnam. Back then there was phone thing called long distance. It actually cost real money!

For the ones that dont know.

A CB is FCC regulated to 4 watts output.
That amp I just showed does 3000 watt output.

On the receiving end, to raise their meter one S unit, you have to double your power output twice.

For example a 4 watt radio gives a guy 3 s units in his reciever.

The next step up would be 16 watts to give him 4 s unit in the reciever.

Just to make math easy round to 20 watts.

Now 80 watts would give him a 5 s unit in the reciever.

Then its a 400 watt amp to give him one more s unit.
1500w....
3000w...

It gets real hard and expensive to push that much power.

1.21 jigawatts!!! Seriously though, this shyt is interesting to me. I do remember my buddy modding my CB radios to more power. We could communicate between our Jeeps for miles. I just never paid attention back then with all the radio stuff. He had his Ham Radio license in high school if I remember right.
