I've got the ubiquitous GY6 150cc engine on my Yerf Dog I recently purchased and we just ran the thing hard for the first time this past weekend.

The engine ran great and even "quiet" for the first 1-2 hours then after that it would no longer idle without dying.

When we did get it started, it ran "louder". Continued to run but loudly. Cranked the idle screw way down but with no effect. Kept dying without pushing gas pedal.

Here are the spec's as far as I know:
  • Standard 150cc Howhitt engine.
  • Standard carb with auto enricher
  • Carb not jetted differently as far as I can tell. I can't make out a size on the existing jet.
  • Aftermarket foam air filter
  • Aftermarket CDI box - don't know how to troubleshoot to see if it's working. . . I guess the engine wouldn't start if it wasn't working, correct?
  • I cleaned carb and only noticed the main gasket was stretched and wouldn't seat back in its groove properly. It leaked fuel a little. I then took it apart again, cut the extra length and put it back in with a butt joint in the gasket. No more leaking but wondering if this would effect what I experienced? Will be getting a new carb--Amazon for $20 or $30 depending on which brand--any recommendations?

I'm just learning carbs and engines so hopefully whatever suggestions somebody may have isn't above my pay grade!

Not a trick question.
Process of elimination.
There is gas in the tank. Good!
One less thing.

For those who might not remember (and since you seem like a good sport)....:cheers2:

Just purchased the Predator 212cc hemi from HF. Since I had the time, figured I'd do the 3-hour break in thing.

Started easy and was running for about 45 minutes then conked out. Yes, plenty of oil and gas.

Should I return it? Or . . . ?

Okay. . . problem solved. Just out of gas.

"Son, did you fill the tank?"

"Yea, dad, sure did!"

"How much gas did it take?"

"I put in as much as I put in the weed whacker. . . "

I had a similar issue with a Howitt on my Crossfire. I ended up getting a new CDI, coil and spark plug for $20 on Ebay and never had the problem again. Just my 2 cents worth....
