Gy6 no spark

I have a gy6 that I'm getting no spark on. The stator has 86vAC coming from it. The pickup coil is getting 0.3v and 145 ohms of resistance. Any help is appreciated as I am new to karting.

Does a stop switch have to be in place to get fire. I have it unplugged.

The kill switch wire (white/black usually) has to be grounded to kill the spark. If you left this wire hanging or snipped it, the engine would fire and run. If the kill switch wire is connected to the engine ground, the CDI would not spark and the engine would not run.

[edit] There is voltage on this wire when the engine is running. Enough to give you a good zap.

[edit2] If you are new to karting and plan on having these engines around I would suggest ordering at least one spare CDI, voltage regulator, and coil. I've had all three fail at some point. Swapping a new one in (After verifying wiring so you don't burn up your spare as well!) makes troubleshooting a lot easier.

Reconnect the switch wires on both if equipped. Why did you disconnect/unplug the switch?

I have a tester similar to this one. Connect the coil wire (what the GY6 plug wire is called) to it and clamp it on a good clean metal area of the kart. If the kill switch isn't working right you'll get one spark when you turn the key on then none as you crank it. Otherwise it will continually spark as you crank the engine indicating good functionality. As indicated from Pripyat, having spare ignition parts as test parts is a good idea. I would add having spare stop switches on hand too since they can be finicky.

I didn't unhook it. I got it that way as a project.
So, is the 1 spark comment true?

From my understanding it wouldn't be possible on an AC CDI but may be possible on a DC CDI. An AC CDI requires the engine flywheel to be rotating to charge a capacitor which is then discharged into the coil when the CDI receives the trigger signal. A DC CDI uses the battery instead of a dedicated charging coil so a spark technically could occur without the engine spinning.

If I had to guess, I would say that there are some DC CDIs that waste a spark when the unit first receives voltage from the battery (from the keyswitch) but I can't imagine that all units would do this.

That's exactly how the last GY6 engine I repaired behaved. It would crank but not start. If I grounded my test plug then turned the key on it would spark one time then nothing when I cranked it. I switched the wires on the kill switch in the dash and it fired up. At least on that kart the wires had to be opposite on each kill switch. Center lug had a blue wire with a white stripe and the end lug had a green wire, the other switch was opposite.

I'm getting no voltage coming from cdi pin 2 to the ignition coil. What does that indicate? Bad cdi?

New CDI didn't fix it. Checked the cdi ground wire and found a short. Repaired wire and it sparks now. Thanks for the help. I'm sure I'll be posting on getting it running now that I have fire, I'll need fuel.
