I am replacing the crankshaft for my Gx240 motor. When I disassembled the engine, I noticed some of the timing dots do not line up. Before breaking the engine down, I did verify that the engine runs, and runs strong. Notice in the pic that the #2 dots line up but the #1 dots do not. When I reassemble with the new shaft, should I leave the #1 dots as is or attempt to line them up.

Thanks in advance

The piston has to be at TDC. Then the crank and cam should line up and the balancer and crank should also line up at the same time.

they cannot line up at the same time.. since the dots on the crank are nearly aligned already
(and rotationally fixed)

they ARE already "as lined up as needed"
rotate the crank a bit (10 teeth) and you'll see...

I think it has something to do with order of installation..
if the cam lines up, maybe the balancer couldn't easily be installed
(it's weights hitting the ones on the crank)
and for the balancer to be easily installed, the engine cannot be at tdc... *shrugs*

All I know is that the crank has to rotate slightly (if you take a close look at the pdf.. you see the keyway rotated between the alignments of the balancer and cam even)
the pic in the workshop manual isn't much better I'm afraid ;)
