GX200 clone charging coil

As the title says , i have a question about putting a charging coil on a GX200 clone .

I recently aquired a GX200 clone that i plan to use for a minibike (Rondo is on the backburner , sorry ) and id like to have at least a headlight powered by the engine .

I grabbed two charging coils from alliexpress for 10$ shipped , and i opened up the engine for some port / polish and the usual . Removed the flyhweel and instant bad news . The engine only has a mount for a single charging coil . Okay , guess itl be a lot less power now ...

Also noticed that the flywheel is a lot different than the one in the old G200 i had , which i didnt pay attention to until i decided to spin the engine over by hand to check the output of the coil .

Short circuited it delivered maybe 50-70mA , and i couldnt get a voltage reading at all .

Is this futile effort since the flywheel only has one magnet and its on the outer edge of the flywheel ?

Took 10 pulls of the starter to charge up a small 100uF capacitor to .5V ..

You need the matching flywheel, yours does not have any magnets on the inside to make power.

The current you are getting is from whatever magnetism is making it through the flywheel from your ignition magnet.

Would it be possible to add neodymium magnets on the inside with epoxy ?

I really dont want to spend any more than i need to , 3 magnet flywheels are 70 USD + , and im not sure if i have the same taper size .

Il do some measurements and supply pictures tomorrow.

What karl said.. DO NOT epoxy magnets to the flywheel..
you'll create an imbalence that'll essentially cause more harm than good.

But frankly.. if all you're after is a small headlight, then don't even bother buying the complete kit
you can use one of your old brushless motors and have it turned over by the flywheel or crankshaft.
then a trinagular rectifier to get plain two wire DC should do the trick,
and since I know you have both (some brushless motors and some diodes) laying around, I guess that's the easier way to go for you :D

I never thought of that , im experimenting with this because me and Karte_molim are still in contact , he has the trike going on and he would like an easy power source to put a headlight on it aswell ..

Tho , how much power could i expect from them , if i do a three phase to DC converter ? Thats 6 diodes if i remember correctly .

Some capacitors to filter it out , and my 100F 2,7V caps could be arranged into a makeshift "battery pack" .

Six diodes is correct (two per pole)

you'll also need a voltage regulator as well for brushless dc motors
how much power you can draw depends on the motor being used..and the regulator
I guess a quarter to about a half of what you drive the motor with is what I'd draw max (to get you a ballpark)

A voltage regulator is needed because the output voltage depends on the motor speed
(the kV reading you see on RC motors)
so it varies with the engine rpm and since it's terribly tricky (not impossible though) to set it up in a way that it's always between 12 and 15 Volts you'd rather wedge a regulator in between
and have it produce somewhere between 13-20 volts or more to scale down from there.

With low voltage and low power LEDS you might even get away with a simply bicycle dynamo driven by the flywheel ;)
(as simple as it gets really)

What I wonder.. that guy on ebay must have a source for that kit..
likely a chinese source.. maybe a source where others can order from as well (alibaba?)
And since most alibaba stuff is relatively cheap to buy and ship...
maybe the taxes aren't as bad either... worth a try maybe.
Since frankly.. mocking something up is nice, but doing it right for pennies is even better.

PS next best thing: find a broken and [useless] e-start gx200 on the local classifieds or dumpster... take what you need and be done.

I know not exactly as cheap .. BUT inner european shipping... and thanks to that no import taxes either.
