GX140 flywheel is actually same as GX160?

I have a GX140 that became a bogged-down, unfinished pandemic project. Upgrading the flywheel was always a sticking point because I had read that the taper was smaller than a GX160/200. Now I actually have something to put it in and would like to modify it.

My Google-fu has improved since then and I'm finding that a lot of parts references show the same flywheel for GX140s and GX160s. If the 160 flywheel fits a 140 and a 160 flywheel fits the 200, then a 200/clone flywheel should fit the 140, which would solve the problem of availability.

Does anyone have more insight on the parts interchange here? I don't have a 196 clone or anything to get measurements from, only the GX140 and a hemi Predator.

That’s an extremely eureka moment to find similar part numbers across two different engines. It used to be a Gargle-Fu problem indeed, or a lack of Gargle-Fu and lack of published info.

Surely someone knows the answers you seek, might be a lot of forum/Youtube searching and then the dreadful confirmation.

I just found an old sheet of my notes from 10+ years ago where I measured the GX140 crankshaft and flywheel. Some of the cast aluminum flywheel listings have the diameters listed and they appear to be the same or close enough to work on a 140 crank. I have one on order, so I guess I'll find out.

Even if the flywheel was slightly larger but the same taper key position OR heck not even the same key position you can just run no key.

But back to the flywheel if it was slightly larger you could always make a bracket to raise the coil up the small needed amount. I have a Briggs running a gy6 Cdi ignition and the firing point for the Cdi trigger was so far off from the stock key.

I just ended up guessing and put the piston slightly down in the bore from top dead on the compression stroke made the Cdi fire at that point and it runs great!
