Even though comet went out of business it can appear that they have been bought out by a company called GTC which will specialize in making Go Kart and Minibike products. The thing is you must be clever enough to tell that everything that they are selling is a Lie, and their parts are much lower quality than the Original Comet products. As newrider3 said all of the comet tooling and products have been bought by CPC, who will develop them under the same name. When buying a new Torque Converter be careful where you are buying for and make sure it's the original, and don't be fooled like me :D As well as this Thank you very much newrider3!

That is a clone company, a horrible one by the way they just took Comet's pictures and photoshopped their logo onto the covers. Hoffco/Comet was bought by CPC, the company that also bought out Tecumseh, they own all the intellectual property and tooling for the TAV stuff now.

Woodmandan2 and Newrider3,
I'm afraid you are both highly misinformed. GTC is producing High Quality Torque converters here in the USA. The parts are fully compatible with the Comet TAV2. I have installed a GTC Torque Converter I received as part of a Beta Test on my Mini Bike. The GTC Torque Converter performs like a dream. I have driven it quite a bit over the last 2 months without incident and I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT. As for CPC, they bought Tecumseh last year...have you seen any Tecumseh Engines for sale yet? I don't think so. It's one thing to buy some tooling at auction, and quite another to manufacture a product. Don't hold your breath. GTC has done it

Nice advertising bro, I'm totally convinced you don't work for them.

Care to tell me why there are no original images anywhere on that site?

You know... as much as it might suck, at least a TAV type clutch is avaliable from SOMEWHERE! I mean, we're tossing Chinese clone motors on our yard karts left and right... and as horrible as that is, it's difficult to manufacture those products in the United States, with well paid employees, and still have a price/quality competitive product. And lets face it, those little engines get abused! Hopefully these clutches don't suck too much... because I might have another project in mind, and I'd like to use a TAV or (TC2 :/ ) clutch on it. Time will tell.

^ I completely agree. What is the difference? And at least they claim they are being made in America. More and more people throw foreign or chinese engines on their karts everyday. Myself included (my motor is Japanese) There's even a racing series built off of them. We gave them a try and it turned out well. Why not give these a try and see what happens. At least it's something. Not for the guys who's motor has a 1" shaft like mine, but either way it's something that we havent had for a while. I find that hard to complain about. Just my .02 cents
But for the guy who claims he works at GTC, if I'm reading the site correctly you claim the TAV30 style is suitable for up to 11hp with a 1inch bore. This would technically be the comet 40 series wouldnt it? Why are all of the images the same yet the products are different?

From what I can see the Chinese knockoff clutches have bad springs and bad belts. Though if there is still some supply from gates on the belts that issue is negated and for the springs thats still there too right?

As for "gtc" I have no idea, I'm really glad I started reading this forum to find out about stuff like that, if they've got a 7,000 sq ft machining warehouse pumping out AMERICAN MADE torque converters would they really not contact every major go-kart parts dealer in the United States saying they are producing this amazingly quality product?

This seems spurious at best to me, but no offense to anyone at "gtc", please if you are producing this product in America, toss up some more pictures of your warehouse, machines, supplies of this stuff being made, post videos and whatnot, I personally would really like to see this, I can't stop watching shows like How Its Made!

Please post anything you've got on info for this! I know BMI who seem like really awesome people posted a large number of Chinese assemblies using some Comet parts on eBay for 155 and 20 shipping and sold out wicked fast. I'm just guessing offhand it takes 4 months from a boat carrying this product to go from China and through inspection and they sold out 1 and a half months ago? So in you know when we'll have another flood and satisfy the masses, if there is an American alternative besides CPC lets seem if they're legit, the site doesnt look like it but thats just because their pictures all are strangely stock.

Heck, my real concern is belts... series 20 people (anyone who has a carter) needs belts, please Carter, place a huge order!

Sorry to post twice but I'm curious...

I've we've used series 20-30 on 3.5-12hp engines just fine, on series 40-44 we've used them on 8-16hps just fine. Granted anything 10+ on a series 20-30 does seem to strain the clutch systems a tad bit it does still work and the belt wear is not that much more significant.

Series 40 is very much different from a 30 however, it doesn't seem like this company is producing series 40 products. If any torque converters at all...

So far I've only ever used the 30 series on mine. When I started out with a stock 5hp tec it lasted. I moved up to a stock 7hp subaru and it lasted, but I saw more wear. After I modded the subaru (timing, intake, exhaust) I needed to take it apart and lube everything for it to even last on our trips. I dont know what that engine was making as far as power goes after the mods but the TC wasn't liking it very much. I'm not complaining though. I put about 900 miles on it just this summer and it just really started not lasting toward the end. After the mods starting going on is just when I needed to clean it after every 4 day trip. For the riding we did, having a TC that didnt properly work on the second have of a trip wasnt fun.

Now I upgraded to a 9hp subaru with exhaust/timing and a 40 series. I havent driven it with these yet though. I dont have the same issue that it needs to last me on a 4 day riding trip though ( I dont talk with the people that took me anymore). Now I just need it to perform through the abuse of a day.

alright so im new to this site but have been in the go kart world a while, i have 2 go karts and a minibike and am working on building a 3rd go kart which used to be a yerfdog 1203a model, but i crashed it a while ago and the front right yoke snapped off, since then ive cut off the frontt end and welded a entirely new one on i built fom some old thick walled pipe, and im going to put a live axle set up on the back, and a torque converter. i have a 5hp tecumseh powersport engine, but can someone explain or post some pictures of how the tav mounts on the engine and how its connected to the drive axle, thx!!

Umm, this is the second time you've jacked a thread to try to start your own. I'm sure you don't mean to, but...
Make sure you're not in an existing thread when you hit the "post" button, make sure the above mentioned post button says "new thread", and not "reply".

Just as a heads up it seems that BMI has aftermarket TQs in stock again for 165 on their site. That should be great news to anyone who needs a series 30 assembly.

Dead thread, but any people using these comet knock-offs? I am going to buy a 40 series and try it out, since it is $120 cheaper than a comet tav. I wanted some feedback on them if you have any!
