Hello everyone. New to karting but not new to mechanics or gas powered fun toys. For a bit of background I rebuild and restore mostly motorcycles. I had an old 8hp Carter when I was a kid but that was a along time ago. Yesterday I picked up a Manco Deuce for a great price(ie: Free) and drug it home. Its all there but it needs litteraly everything. From what I read the transaxle is the weak spot. This one seems to roll ok without any weird noises while in gear. I pulled the 12Hp Tecumseh off, put it on a bench and with some tinkering got it to fire briefly. Its pretty beat though. I have no idea what to do with this thing. I was going to give myself a $1000 budget to fix it up. Shopping list anyone?

Excuse my ignorance (no idea how the drive train on these function) but can I not use the pulleys that I have currently? What does a 40 series torque converter involve?

You are going to have to post a pic of the "pulleys" that you have at the moment. You might have a torque converter already. A TC is a variable speed transmission, working very similar to a scooters CVT where you just have a throttle

I can do that when i get home. Its a big driver pulley attached to the end of he crank with a belt attached to another pulley at the transaxle. Do they go bad?

from what little I can see on the pic, it seems you have a comet series 500 driven installed already.

if the pulley on your engine has a nice round (half globe) dome with some holes then you have indeed a comet 500 series torque converter. (or 858 depending on the driven diameter)

That you can keep (after some good maintenance that is) for about any engine up to 16hp.
the belt alone is rather expensive though ($50++)

Also are these horizontal shaft engines pretty much plug and play? I see home depot has a 15hp lifan(honda clone) for $329. As long as they have a 1" shaft I can use whatever right?

as long it's the same shaft diameter and still a straight keyed shaft... yes, pretty much plug and play.

In order to make it work on a GoKart you need to "remote" control the throttle with your pedal, which is not necessarily given off the shelf ;)

Also take some care about the size of the engine itself, bigger engines (displacement wise) are usually also bigger in outside dimensions, and therefor might or might not fit behind your seat.

sometimes the shaft sits a fraction of an inch higher or further back yadda yadda..
all in all: "pretty much drop in" means some fiddling might still be involved ;)

The non - electric start Lifan 420cc goes on sale for cheaper. I linked it at $250, but now it is $320 again.
If it were me, I'd try the eBay engine, but they are your dollars. If you have some time, a member or two just got these engines $169 420's. They are new to everyone here, I believe, but have heard of a 4k rev limiting coil on them?

They updated it, I'll have it tomorrow.

The price is low, but I bet they all come from the same place.

The Manco Duece is a sweet kart. Really a mini buggy. User MASCMAN has one he put a 23hp Vanguard on, but I believe a warmed over 420 will push it around well.

You already have more clutch that you'll ever need if you stay with industrial engines, so you're lucky there.

I don't.. it needs lots of love, other than that it'll be fine..
the lousy angles make it terribly hard to identify though..
(some sort of 94c perhaps... but that webbing looks salsbury to me *shrugs*)

and generally drivers mount the other way around, but hey.. as long as I don't know what clutch it is, I can't say it's wrong, can I ;)
