Hey all, this isn't my first post but figured I would take a few to introduce myself and possibly get some questions answered. Totally a newbie here, revisiting my childhood dreams for my kids haha. Starting combing the web for a used go-kart after doing some research, didn't want to go with one of these new Chinese made karts. After a couple weeks came across this Carter for $300....was running fine but needed tires and had absolutely no brakes. Frame is solid with very minimal rust compared to what i've seen around for more $$
So far I have replaced all 4 tires, new band brake and drum, wheel bearings all around, kill switch, LED lights, new carb, complete driver clutch, driven spring/buttons and belt. Been learning as I go thanks to the great info found on here and some perfect YouTube videos.
After many grease and sweat filled days kart is finally running ok, kids love it (8 & 9 year olds, not driving it yet) and honestly at this point think dad is having the most fun of all.
Looking for a few pointers/advice, I just ordered a 212cc Predator from Harbor Freight, if I ever get it.....I could not locate one in stock within a 300 mile radius so had to order online and have not heard anything from HF. The 6HP Tecumseh runs ok, usual (from what i've read) issues.....impossible to get the idle tweaked....either can get it to start right up but once warmed idle is wayyyy to high and the driver clutch engages or perfect when warm, but impossible to start....it's also ****ing oil from the usual spots and runs rough....kart sometimes rattles like its about to explode. Still can't pinpoint the cause of the vibration but it's pretty bad.
From what I've read it is in my best interest to retire the Tec and not spend any time or money on it....thoughts?? Just have a feeling I could be waiting weeks if not longer for the Predator and this engine is a ticking time bomb.
Once I pull the Tec I won't have the lighting power, figured I will just throw a 12V SLA in there with volt gauge and toggle for the lights and just charge when needed (this is my thing, I am an electrical engineer)....can anyone recommend a good means of mounting a battery??
Also just can't seem to get the steering right......read all about Ackerman and get the concept...just failing to implement....when I got the cart it was all over the place....shook horribly at high speeds, very unsafe......I've managed to significantly improve however still difficult turning, particularly to the left. Any advice on the alignment process? Any suggestions on steering hardware upgrades? Pictures below...more than happy to take more, just let me know.
