So instead of another kart build, I made a greenhouse this year. I may try to throw some of my builds up on Craigslist to make room for more stuff, and do a build this summer. But on with the greenhouse.

Hand dug a footer for 10x10 stem wall.

Added some siding, a storm door, and temperature activated vents.

And framed in some shelves. Over the course of the next few years I'll be adding things like Solar fans, galvanized racks for the shelving, a thermal mass, gutters to collect rain water, and an automatic watering system.

Greenhouses are cool. A few things...I can't tell which way this thingis oriented by the pictures. .. but hopefully one long side is facing south.

Here's what I did with my small greenhouse that made it super nice....

On the north wall- three 55gal barrels painted black filled with water. On top of them ....a shelf with 5 gal buckets of growing medium for whatever. (I grew squash in the middle of winter- just for the heck of it...)

On the south side... I did a tier of shelving... ( think bleachers)...to hold flats of seedlings.....The first one was about 16" off the floor so that I had room for an arsenal of 2 liter soda bottles full of water underneath. (More thermal mass).

On the far west end- I had a little bed that was inground @ 2×8' that I grew an amazing amount of lettuce, beets, carrots and whatever in....

Do yourself one favor- get some fish emulsion to add to your watering bucket....your plants will love it. ...and when you go out in the morning. ... you will feel like you are at the beach......

But this does bring up something from my storied past...... when I was about 15....my brother planted some pot seeds in the backyard flowerbed. We had a nice little plant going. ....

Not really clear on how or why. ...but one day mama found out what it was.....

Now- this isn't what you would expect. ...she helped water it....and said..."If dad (stepfather) ever figures out what this is.....we're all in trouble. .."

Have I been blessed with the coolest mom ever?.... Anyway- those dope days are passed me now and I could care less......

BTW- She never partook and doesn't even drink. .....

It would be hard to put the long side to the south, since it's square, but I suppose that also means that the longest side faces South.

My current plan for Thermal Mass is a 200 gallon black stock tank. Depending on a lot of factors, I may put some Koi in it, and I'll be able to squirt their poop all over the plants. We'll see how everything pans out.

Dang I miss my gardens! I'm just putting in some tomatoes, basil, sage, lavender, peppers, etc. now. I think I may do squash and melons too this year. We (in texas) had a really hard freeze (who didn't!) this year so the things that we expected to over-winter didn't make it. My dang pond even froze and killed my fish! For us in this far south it was pretty unexpected.

I need to make myself a greenhouse, too!

(oh, and Poboy, OMG LOL that's hilarious! Don't try that at home, kids! Well unless you live in Colorado...)

Yeah- what I meant was you don't want the door on that side. You want to tier stuff up because the sun comes in at a low angle in the winter from the south......And the east side was the door on mine.....

And Robert- I did stick a grapevine in the dirt yesterday, but I'm way behind on planting. About 3 years ago was a really good year for gardening. I had so many cantaloupe that I couldn't eat them all..... and neither could the possums....but they tried their best..

Now I have a big ol coon hanging around. Who knows what kind of mischief he'll get into.....Needless to say- the trash doesn't go out until pickup day morning- but on the upside....these guys are my outdoor garbage disposals....anything that goes bad- they will lick the pot clean!

EDIT: I know it's a little late now- but when the pond freezes-you can either boil a pot of water and set it on top of the ice or a pot of charcoal. ...either way- as long as you get one small hole in the ice- the fish won't suffocate.

For the record fish won't suffocate under ice either they don't need air to breath they use gills. More then likely they died because your pond wasn't deep enough or you had a variety of fish that are very sensative to cold. I have had gold fish ponds for years and they have been iced over for at least a month at a time.

They don't need air to breathe.....duh!.....but they need oxygen. ...and in our shallow Texas ponds....that kills them faster than cold....and ice will and does allow CO2 levels to rise and oxygen to be depleted. ....

But don't argue with me.....consult a biologist on this.....see what he says.....

Finally got around to putting down weedblock and mulch, and putting on the shelves. Works a bit better than random chunks of 2x4 and plywood. :D
