Took the go-kart for a spin used my Garmin GPS and it clocked at 25 mph...Is that normal for a 6.5 hp , Harbor Freight engine? Being that low to the ground 25mph is ok , but I have seen posts at 35 / 40 mph do not recall if it was a 6.5 hp engine...Thanks ..Bob...P.S. I'm having a BLAST with this kart , my grandson may not get it ...:)

Bob, the reason why you are going 25MPH is because of your gearing. If you swapped your axle sprocket for a slightly smaller sprocket then you would get more speed. But, with gaining speed, you lose torque. Torque and speed kinda cancel each other out. But remember, on a kart with normal, 11"-15" tires and no TC, then you should at least have a gear ratio of 5:1 or else you take the risk of burning up your clutch. On your kart, I bet you have a lot of torque with a low top-end.

Thank you , this week-end we are going to take it to the park and then we will decide which one will work out best for us...Basically we are planning to take it to an empty parking lot and enjoy riding it...

Post pics of your kart! :)

Check how tall your rear wheels are, and count your sprocket teeth (both sprockets) and let us know what you have. Do you have a centrifugal clutch, or a torque converter?

I am guessing that you are probably geared to about 7:1. If you get a smaller rear sprocket, or larger clutch tooth count, you will get more speed. I wouldn't really go higher than 6:1 though. To calculate your gearing, use this formula:

(axle sprocket tooth count)/(clutch sprocket tooth count) = ?:1

I bought this Kart for $100, think I got a great deal on it , will do some painting and a new seat and I'll have a nice little Kart for my 7 yr. old grandson to ride in an open parking lot...Bob

Unless it's a dedicated racing kart on pavement, I'm always a bit suspect of folks claiming much over 35-40 mph on a kart, that's AWFULLY fast for the typical kart (especially on anything but smooth pavement).

If you're having fun, who cares how many mph it goes? Enjoy! :cheers2:

I am enjoying it , took off the muffler and I got 26.4 mph per the GPS, it is ok on the power when you are that low to the ground:auto:
