IMHO, no it's not necessary for everyday riders, backyard fun time, trail busting, mud hole stomping vehicles.
For drag racing only, then yes remove it completely. But dont expect it to be a daily rider without alot of maintenance.
Heres 2 small blocks that make really strong low rpm torque and theres plenty of power on the high side, with the governors working.
Turns more rpm then normal predators and 196 clones right outta the box, because of the better combo of parts and tighter tolerances. Better cam profiles, air boxes, exhausts, rods, heads, and carbs.
The stock small block preds and clones are done at 4800-4900, there's jus no more hp above that rpm for them to pull anymore.
So removing the governor for more speed is NOT the answer.
A little bit of tuning, thinner head gasket, timing key, and open the main jet up to .031" will make the small block preds and 196 clones safely run to that 4900 rpm mark, and live a long life.
It's jus gonna take a better combo of parts to get ANY more rpm.
It's the same with big blocks, except at a lower rpm.
These are utility engines, we have to make them good, reliable, recreational vehicle engines.
Hope this helps.
