I've got a 5hp tecumseh on my kart that I can hit 35 mph with. I have a 5:1 gear ratio (12 on the clutch, 60 on the sprocket) my wheels are 10.5" total diameter (wheels and tires) and doing some basic math, at 35 mph this means the engine speed is about 5500 rpm. I'm pretty sure my engine is supposed to be governed at 3600. Is my governor just not working? I'd rather not destroy my engine by over revving it.

Just curious... how is it that you 'know' that you are doing 35mph(just wondering cause there are 'some' flaws w/ 'certain' types of speed measurement/devises)? Distance of measurement, satellite connection, radar calibration, human error... being afew of them.

I 'too' had the same mathematical UNequation... doing 35mph according to both a troopers radar gun, and an atv speedometer, in my case. I never 'verified' that I was doing what they said, so was never 100% sure of the measurement. At the time I was runnin a NEW unmodded HF212 geared 5:1 on 10's... same as you, as far as speed equations are concerned.

Since then Ive watched the vids of the kart driving, back then, and have come to the conclusion that I miss heard both of the measurements when they 'told' them to me(Im kinda hard of hearing). It was my first kart, and pretty much the first time driving it, on a norm... so I had no XP of how 25mph felt riding 3" off the ground. Today, I travel at a verified 50mph... and I now know what 25mph actually feels/looks/sounds like, for the most part, and can say that I was NOT doing 35mph back then.

How does the GPS calculate the rpm? Does it have a physical sensor attached or is this just mathematically?
