thats what im trying to figure out i dont have a torque wrench but im tightening the side cover snuggly. The drive shaft turns when the side cover bolts are loose but this is too loose and the oil comes out.

The term "reciprocating assembly" simply means the crankshaft, connecting rod, and piston. Also- is your new side cover gasket the correct thickness?

EDIT- the above term is generally applicable to ALL engines, and is NOT specific to B&S.

I checked that the motor would pull start before i put the side cover on and it worked fine until i tightened the side cover bolts. I would think the gasket is the right thickness i got it from a lawn mower shop after i gave them the model number.

Then don't bloody pull stuff like that apart!! :mad2:

FYI. What's probably happening is you aren't doing them all up to the same torque so the side cover is flexing and binding on your shaft.

Either that or you've folded the seal over itself or dented the shaft or bushing ect.

Also, if you're trying to do it up without a gasket there then that will be your issue.

I've gotta go with Sideways on this one. Unless you have a LOT of experience, I would never recommend tearing into an engine without a service manual and a torque value spec sheet. Speaking of which, do yourself a big@ss favour and buy a torque wrench.

Even WITH my experience, I still prefer to have a manual at hand.

Make sure you have a gasket! And a new one would be a good idea, sounds like you have lost your 'endplay' so the crank is binding.

I never used to use a torque wrench for doing side cover bolts, but it's not a bad idea. You don't want to strip the aluminium.

You can make a ghetto torque wrench by getting a breaker bar, and putting a weight on it.
1lb weight at 1ft length = 1ft lb
1lb weight at .5ft lengh = .5ft lb ect...

Not only is a torque wrench a good idea to avoid stripping out the aluminum... Do you have ANY idea how many sheared keys would have been avoided with a torque wrench and the appropriate specification?

i was searching the forums and i think my problem is that the gasket is too thin. I read that there are 3 different thickness gaskets sold for the 5 hp briggs so i'm gonna try and see if my local lawn mower shop has a thicker gasket.

I fixed it by stacking two gaskets on top of each other since the shop did not have any thicker gaskets. The crankshaft does not stick anymore but now i cant get the motor to start .
