*cough*
well thanks for sharing..

we always tell to remove the governor or to leave it alone.. and this is a perfect example
why I said Joe was lucky earlier (with just having a plastic piece locking the compression release)

You haven't had that much luck obviously :(

But I bet you knew you should remove the governor before that happened, right ;)

It came to me that way. Well I got to drive it maybe a day or two then a huge racket and instant stop.

I was naïve and "assumed" .

No big deal I thought till I realized i had a 1 inch clutch and had to up the predator price.

Got a 301 to strap on.

What engine and displacement is this?

This is catastrophic.

Likely sequence of events: the governor went critical, its parts got digested by the balance shaft and its gearing which in turn destroyed it and cracked the block?

Is anything else damaged?

You should clean it up a bit and lay out all the ruined parts and take a few "autopsy" photos--this is interesting.

My diagnosis also.

The rod is knicked, piston skirt knicked. I've polished out such damage and reassembled no problems.

All governor parts and balance shaft are toast. The casting in the case and cover holding balancing shaft are busted out and the cover and case are toast.

At first I thought I could tig the cover back and upon disassembly it get worse and worse. A cover was like 250 dollars from B&S. I got a new engine for that. Lol.

I can post pics later.

I get a kick out of the teeth marks in the case. That's a lot of force!

Stick a fork in it, it's done. Pretty impressive failure. Pretty dangerous to have happen on a go kart also. I'm always hesitant to wind mine all the way up for this very reason.

I love the gory post mortem but a sad loss when a good engine dies. :worried2: :worried2: :worried2:

In any event, scavenge all you can, even those ball bearings that support the crank, and sell them on fleabay or something.

I do have another identical engine. So... I'm gonna experiment with milling the head down and make a high compression head. Just in case I want to make a bigger bang. Lol.

Just to derail my own thread.
I'm used to blowing up engines. I guess I like rebuilding them too.
This was a light oops...
