Got this baby today from HF for special 2hr sale price($99). Now what do i need to make this work on a 26" Mountain Bike? Was gonna plan to mount it a FWD but its heavier than I thought so might do RWD. I have no problem mounting the motor. Just need help with what i need to make this thing fully functional.

-which clutch is right/best?
-recommended chain type?
-recommended sprocket sizes?
-where can i find freewheel adapter for bike?
.....etc.

that's all i could think of now...will ask more if anything comes in mind.

Let me be the first to tell you this, you should not put this on a 26" mountain bike. 1) Too much power for that wheel. 2) Too heavy for the bike, it'd be easy to lay the bike down hard while riding. 3) Puttin this thing on a go kart would be a lot more fun haha

Look into a "pusher trailer"(I think..?). Basically a one wheel trailer with the engine powering the wheel, hooked to your bike via a uni-joint. Doing this will be much easier to build and operate than mounting the engine on the bike.

yea, i know this on a bike is over killed. I plan to ride this on a public trails(barely any people at all) in my neighborhood and plan to quiet down the exhaust. It'll look odd to drive a noisy go kart in residential trails which will attract cops. More of brainstorming what to put it on.

@jcotx, that's exactly what i need. I'm assuming since my engine will have a clutch, guess i don't need a freewheel type of it?

@r97, will keep that in mind. Just found somebody selling a sprocketed mini bike wheel used. He's selling it with some other parts but hoping he'll let it go for around $20.

What you guys mean by "A max torque 3/4 clutch"? does that mean the clutch will let out 75% of my full throttle or something?
(sorry, still new to the scene. Learning.)

They mean that the clutch fits ona 3/4 inch engine shaft. It is just the size of the hole in the middle, thats all

Can you return that for smaller 3hp engine?

you talking about the 99cc one? I could but I'd like to stay with this one. I dont like gas/oil mix motors. Also, my plans are not permanent. I may want to put this motor on something more heavy in the future(go kart, mini dirt bike, quad bike, etc).

Oh yea, found a quieter exhaust than the one i posted above. Will probably buy this one. J/W, how would it sound/perform if i have two of these making it twin muffler? crazy thinking but just being "Curious George", lol

Post pics as you go. I would like to see what you have in mind.

yep, will do. I got as crazy as building a "Motorized Picnic table", lol. More of a sleeper vehicle you could say. Wheels behind the table legs. Motor hidden in a cooler under the table(it'll be cooled, don't worry). Chair/bench fixed with table. It'll be fun to have friends over and all a sudden I said, "lets go to the park"(which is 2 blocks away from my house). Weird, but that's me.

The 3hp motor from Harbor Frieght is a 4 stroke motor... so it does not require oil/gas mix.

Was looking at the 99cc but didn't get it bc it was $109 and the 212 is on a 2hr sale of $99. If the 212cc wasn't onsale, yea probably got the 99cc forsure.

kmy- Dont take this the wrong way, But as far as a mountain bike with this engine, it is way too much power for which the brakes cant stop it safely. Even an upgrade to a disc brake system wont be all that good( much better, but not really).

Secondly most people who have done "similar" thing with there bike dont use a free-wheeler from a bmx. The clutch will suffice for this job.

Aside from a major re-design of the mountain bike, what have you planed to do with the engine, in frame, on frame ect. all pose an unique challenge to build.

lastly, what kinda skills and tools do you have, fill us all in as we then can better work with you.

I understand the big motor on a bike & braking system. I'm just basically brainstorming right now. Not sure what to put it on. Even if I want to put it on a bike I wouldn't use lower teeth sprockets - I've read a lot on that on the DIY page. Its my first engine so I'm just having crazy ideas on what to build. Probably end up a "go kart" type set up.

My plans with the motor is unsure as I'm just "thinking" what to do with it. Just trying to get the basics of the motor of what it needs to make it run BUT this is for sure - Its not going to stay in what I put it in for long(no more than a year). So I don't plan to build a $1000 go kart and change my mind within 6mos. I like to experience and built new things all the time. Only thing FORSURE will last is a Quad-bicycle. I've always wanted one but cost too much to buy so if I can learn how to weld decently, I'll built myself one. Pedal & motorized. Currently gathering small 16" bike wheels right now for that project.

As far as skill goes, I'm a slightly over average mechanic. Been working on cars almost 10yrs now. I fix all the family's car issues & do maintenance. Experience with tools? I have many tools from sockets, impact wrenches, cutting tools, torching, all the way to my 33 Gal. compressor. NEVER did anything welding related. Hoping to get a welder soon this spring.

How about a small straight axle on the mountain bike. The you can have a little 3 wheel mountain bike. IDK just thinking how it could work.

Hey! Did that guy just pass us on a mountain bike?

You would not want that on a mountain bike. But to answer your questions
1. A max torque 3/4 clutch would work well for the price.
2.#35 is pretty standard.
3.You might want a 12 tooth clutch and 72 tooth sprocket for a 1/6 ratio.
4.Is this what you want? http://www.affordablegokarts.com/mm...duct_Code=AGKZ5313*&Category_Code=MTRBK+PARTS

Keep in mind 6.5hp is a lot for a mountain bike.

This would put your speed at 46.4 MPH! at 3600rpm.
Thats hallin A on a Bicycle!
Just change the 72 with a 60 & you can comute on the freeway.:sifone: 55.6MPH!

I think thats just abit to fast for the clutch, with uphill loads.
you need more like a 95tooth, maybe bigger? the 95 would give you a 35.1 top speed with a 26" tall tire. how tall is your tire?

Hmmm a 6.5HP on a mountain bike.

Nope!
even the 99cc engine would be a bit much but better.
I did the 80cc bike engine kit and it would haul me around at 25mph but didnt have to out of hole take off I wanted.(the brakes sucked)

Heres a picture of it (I have sold it long ago)

things you will have to do to keep from eating asphalt:
exchange rims for heavy duty rims or else you see how easy it is for a bicycle rim to come apart literally right under your feet.

Brakes, you'll need REAL brakes, disc on the back for sure I'd do disc brakes on front but some people cant apply front brakes on a bike without losing it.

The frame itself wont hold up to the stress for to long, an old heavy duty cruiser bike might be a better choice.

Around here even a motorized bike is considered a moped so in the end you will still most likely get pulled over.

If a motorized bike is considered a moped then comparing it to a real moped shows a lot of short comings on a motorized bike.

I'd go with an electric bike if I were you beacuse they are very hard to tell they are electric as you zoom by someone.

212cc engine, my dualsport motorcycle has a 200cc engine and weighs about 280lbs and can take a pounding and go down the road at 70mph.

This is still my dream base to build into a ""moped"":drool5:

This is a SIKK 125 trail bike which people say is like a motorized mountian bike but no it couldnt legally be ridden down a bike path.
