New here. Picked up kart that somebody was trying to cobble together. I was mainly interested in the suspension and the Comet SCD-1 axle on it. but I'm thinking about just parting it out. It needs A LOT of work. Any idea what to do with the Comet SCD-1? Probably going to make a whole new frame, new rear suspension setup. I will post pic's once I can get the images hosted. I have horrid internet in the country.

I'm not new to ORV's just never had such an overwhelming project land at my feet. I know how to weld, I just don't have a welder. Its at that point where, I have to decide, hack what I want from it and start fresh. Or repair what's there?

I split the diff to check it out, looks to be in great shape. Only one problem, the bearings are seized to the shafts. I'll cut these off I guess, and the hubs. everything got pretty rusty from sitting outside at the previous owners.

Those welds need a lot of help.

I'd suggest Craigslist and Facebook marketplace. I got me an Idealarc 250 AC/DC for $200. Literal steal.

That was a perfect opportunity for a pun "literal *steel*" lol

On another note, is the comet differential worth much? I may have to do some buying and selling to raise enough for a welder. I'm not worried about getting it done this season. I just want to have everything I need before winter. Then I can do it all while the snow is flying.

Well after 2 hours of fighting to get the hub, sleeve and two bearings off one axle. I've had enough lol. The axle itself was beat on, I had to grind some of the threads off because it was mushroomed over. the keyway had been eaten by the rust too. Don't get me wrong. It can work. Looking at it, I thought maybe I should just make an independent rear suspension. Like the one pictured below. But I know that will get very expensive. The differential and gears are in great condition though.

Eastwood just sent me an e-mail that they are offering a payment plan on their welders... $400 or so can get a 240v with an additional spool gun

This is an interesting kart/buggy. Looks like an urban assault vehicle with that OD green paint.

Is this more or less adult sized or is that an illusion?
Interesting rack and pinion steering. Does it work really well?

Works well enough that most riding mowers have pretty much the exact same setup... A pinion gear turning a quarter ring gear attached to the Pittman arm.

Looking at the construction of it, it's REALLY poorly designed and built. There's so much steel and weld in the frame, I'm sure it's plenty strong, but it probably weighs twice what it needs to. The roll cage is an abomination. I wouldn't trust it to protect you if it flips over.

anickode said it's a death trap in not so many words. Are you applying for the Darwin Awards?

Exactly, works well on mowers but at speed, I dont think it would be the best setup. As far as the frame goes, underneath this mess, is a go kart frame. Its just been pasted together by a six year old with hot glue. Most of it will be cut, restructured, and welded properly. It is actually surprising lightweight. Mostly because of the thinwall tubing. The roll cage will be a must on something this large. At least with a small, light cart, the risk of getting hurt on a rollover isn't nearly as high. Something this size landing on top of you, is just asking for a an ambulance ride.
