I recently picked up a 6.5 clone during the harbor freight sidewalk sale (wicked deal), and today happened to come across an old man with this torque converter. The price was right so i picked it up. Anyway I'm assuming its a TAV 30 asymmetrical (it has the grooved belt and pulleys on one side) , however i started mocking it up on the engine and i believe I'm supposed to have the 2 inner plates of the pulleys lined up. As i push the drive pulley closer to the engine to meet the driven pulley i run into the mounting plate. I'm guessing I'm supposed to get a spacer, and if i am do you know what size? and will affect the performance because I'll only have like a 1/4" of room to put the outer portion of the drive unit on if i space it to were the inner (straight endges) are lined up. And does the spacer need to have a bevel (chamfer) like the crankshaft and inside of the drive pulley have? Also for the drive pulley isn't there supposed a bronze bushing of some sort on the shaft? Becuase right now its just the plain metal shaft.

And where could i get these parts?

Also can i run the unit toward the back of the engine like it's positioned, or is there a certain direction/angle it needs to be run at.

Finally, this guy also has a number of 1" comet torque converters, which i want to go back and buy off of him to put on a vanguard v twin. How can i tell if its a 30, 40, or 44 series? Do the 40 and 44 series not have the external spring on the driven pully?

Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

I know all TAV2 i have seen have that bracket behind the clutches, looks like you are missing the black plastic cover, although not needed.

First, stop calling it a Tav 2, it makes you seem like a silly child and makes me want to hand you a lollipop.

This is a series 30 torque converter assembly.

You are correct that the back plates must line up, get a 3/4" collar that is necessary to line them up, at a minimum you will need 1/4" to hold the main portion of the drive clutch together. That is all that will be required. So just measure and go buy it, if you like you can purchase 3/4" ID conduit and cut the piece you require, if you end up with extra conduit then you'll have material for future projects.

You're missing the Idler Bushing, we've got em, Bmi has them, many places have them.

Run it at whatever direction you desire.

What is the horsepower of your vanguard?

All of the assemblies have a visible spring in the driven clutch. The main way to tell what series the Torque Converters are will be dictated by their size and shape, you see what yours look like, you'll notice a series 40 will be much larger. A series 30 may not hold up your larger engine if it is larger than 10hp.
