i would suggest going to a goodwill outlet, not the regular goodwill you see, but there are outlets where everything is in bins and not on shelves, price is by the pound and not by the item..well they usually have lawnmowers/etc. i found a rototiller 3.5 hp there for 35 bucks. thats a steal of a deal. all ive done to it is lapped and seated the valves, shaved the eyebrows, used a bigger carb (off another engine i have that i blew up) and i do about 32 in it. thats not redlining it. 32mph is safe for this motor.

or check craigslist for garage sales, look for rototillers/edgers/horizontal shaft engines within the garage sales. or you can just check the regular for sale section and type in the same search items. alot of times they give them away practically if they cant get them to start, and most of the times its a easy fix.

I actualy have a Tecumseh Star race motor in my kart now but I wouldnt buy any of their lower priced motors. (the company is now bankrupt/shut down and I heard rumors of pretty serious quality control issues over the last few years...) If I were to buy another 4-stroke kart motor now It would probably be a Briggs Animal. (they're $500)

For a low price motor you should probably do some research on the "clone motor". Its a Chinese built copy of the 6.5-h/p Honda. Lots of guys are running them and theres lots of speed parts avalible if you deside you wanna go faster. Harbor freight stores sell these at prices ranging from between $99 to $139 depending if they're on sale or not.

You'll find a bunch more clone info in this search link: http://www.google.com/search?source...rlz=1T4DMUS_enUS221US222&q=Honda+clone+engine

thanks for the info. im a newb to this but am learning much more.
so between the honda "clone motor" and a used rototiller motor which would be better? I most likely wont be changing anything to the motor...only an air filter, better spark plug and custom exhaust.

the honda clone is gonna run 129.99 (on sale) at harbor freight. you get a brand new engine with 6.5

or you can check craiglist or a garagesale like i did and pick up a 5.5 for 35 bucks. did 12 dollars of work on it and it runs like a champ. you just gotta weigh it out. i mean how important is it to you, do you want to go that much faster for the money (1 hp difference) etc

like i said, i picked up a 5.5 b&s from a goodwill outlet for 35 dollars. they drain all the fluids there so you cant test them or anything. they price them on how clean they look basically, the most expensive of all the rototillers, edgers, and lawnmowers was like 60 dollars.

all i did was check the compression by pulling the starter a little, pulled the plug boot off and checked for spark, and looked at the basic case/head for cracks/fractures. it checked out fine. i took it home, added some gas and it started up on the second pull. it wasnt idling right so i tried adjusting the screw, adn the fuel/air mix, wasnt helping. so i then checked the gasket from the gas tank to the carb, and it was torn to hell. 3.00 dollars later it ran perfect.

im happy with what i got, but those clone engines do seem nice also. plus my neighbor just GAVE me a brand new 5.5 briggs, he was going to throw it away. it works perfect. the transmission went out on his pressure washer or whatever it was (not sure) so he took the engine off and handed it to me.

If your not in a rush snowblowers can often be found freebon Cl. I got a free 3.5 briggs and 8hp wisconsin off cl.

I would also check CL for sleds and motorcycles, sometimes you can find one for under $200, and power wise (for karts) nothing beats a sled or bike engine.
