Got a steal on a electric golf cart with shot batteries, I would really rather have a gas powered one, i think im going to sell all the electronics and install a predator 420cc electric start engine, my question is this, i know i wont have reverse but what about taking a dc motor and running it to the same shaft that goes into the differential, and while driving it can charge the batteries but when i need reverse i can switch it on ?? has anyone done this? i was thinking maybe a treadmill motor

What's the make of your cart? So you're thinking the gas motor is connected to the input shaft of the differential (via a torque converter I assume), and also there is some kind of sprocket or pulley that connects to an electric motor. When the electric motor engages (centrifugal clutch?) it spins the drive train the opposite direction. How do you prevent it from stalling the gas motor?

I did a swap with a 1992 ez go marathon. Welded in a motor mount, welded a sprocket on to the differential, and just used a centrifugal clutch and chain to drive it. Had a 1:15 gear ratio in the differential so I kept the 10 tooth on the clutch and welded another 10 tooth to the diff where the motor was. Tons of fun, lots of torque, donuts in the grass, etc. The 420 is probably overkill but hey, it's your kart, have fun.
