I'm looking at a gas powered golf cart tomorrow. It runs, but they said that sometimes it doesn't move forward. My question is what is the drive train set-up on golf carts? Belt driven? Torque converter? Just looking for a heads up before I go.

I am not 100% sure and someone who may know better can correct me. I believe it's a TC (I think they call it something else but operates the same) that spins a gear box on the axel.

My Ezgo TXT is a Subaru Robin 2 cylinder engine mounted transversely driving a torque converter setup. The TC belt is exposed.

To see the operation of the clutches (on mine, perhaps on the one you are looking at) you can put the gear selector half way between F and R, effectively selecting neutral - even though there isn't a mark for it.

Once in neutral, lift the seat and smash the gas to watch the belt climb (or not) the pulleys.

One can disassemble the clutches and rebuild them or replace them. The expensive item on the gas carts seems to be the engine. If it runs and the starter functions properly with the pedal you are 80% there.

We put ag tires on our golf cart, with most of the weight on the rear axle, (motor, people), it goes through anything until it gets hung up. It does get hung up rather easy though in deep mud or snow. haha.

Ours is a 2 stroke, and from what golf cart guys told us, they run a low amount of 2 stroke oil because the engine doesn't get that hot as a golf cart, and it would smoke too much and foul the muffler. Mufflers for these are stupid expensive.
If you are going to run the golf cart long and hard and it gets hot, more oil is ideal. Thats what I hear anyways, not even sure if yours is 2 or 4 stroke or what, but just saying.

I will be using this to transport friends and family up my long driveway and to my house. It wouldn't be used "hard" so it should work.
The weather didn't cooperate so i had to postpone getting it for a few days.
