to get better performance you can do a number of things
modify engine
get a better transmission
racing
good=general purpose shoe centrifugal clutch, better=racing shoe clutch, best=disc clutch
general use
good= torque converter
better= genuine comet torque converter
best= most expensive torque converter with the biggest high-low range

apart from that, there are other ways to get 'better' performance at the cost of either torque and acceleration or top speed by changing tire size and/or gearing.

Thats about it in a nutshell, but it all depends on what performance you want and on what budget. for most of us, it is either a $20 clutch, or a $100 torque converter, then possibly putting on a $50-$100 stage 1 kit (intake/exhaust/jet) for a boost in overall performance and then remove the governor.

Our team is building a kart for racing and we are using a 3hp Briggs Stratton engine. If I use disc clutch for transmission, would I get better acceleration and torque?
Is there any disadvantage in using a CVT for transmission in a racing kart?

Well most of the time, from what I understand, they are not allowed in most kart racing classes.

Besides that, Torque converters are generally only good up to a certain RPM.
Some say 5000 RPM, some say 6000 RPM... Mine turns 7000 and seems ok.
Belts start to slip. Driver units explode. If you can floor it and keep the pedal mashed the whole race and can use an ungoverened engine that spins 9000 RPM, a clutch would be better than a CVT. I think. I am no Kart racer.

Kunga28- I had to look up where you are.... Since your in India... A plated or the 3d clutch above with be pretty expensive and take months to ship there...
I think your options are to get a small motorcycle or scooter engine, as that will most likely have an automatic or manual clutch with gears...

Yeah you are right.....but I'm in a gokart building competition, in that competition there is a rule that participants should only use 125cc Briggs&Stratton engine. That's what the problem is??

You let go of the clutch pedal or handle fast, it engages, and you either wheelie or do a burn out. It does not slip like a centrifugal clutch, as this manual clutch can be engaged at lower engine rpms.

Say you are racing, you can hold the clutch handle, rev up the engine, dump the clutch and have the advantage of getting further down the track than anyone with a centrifugal clutch, in theory. If you tried to hold the brake pedal and rev up the engine with a centrifugal clutch, you'd end up burning the clutch out much faster, costing quite a bit of money to replace it.

Belt driven clutches use a lot of power to operate. Snowmobile clutches rob about 15 to 20 percent of the engines power.

Cintrifugal racing clutches are designed to get as much power to the ground while minimizing loss.
They work best on a tracks with turns.

The manual clutch is like a dirt bike clutch. Once engaged it's fully locked up.

What type of race are you planning on doing? Drag race, circle track or road course?

I'm in a contest that has various tests....
Main are autocross and 10km endurance tests.....
There is also an acceleration test...

my kart weighs 15 kg and I'm using a Briggs and Stratton 3hp engine....

As it has been said... You don't have many options....
Since you have to stick with a motor of a given type....a TC(cvt), a regular cent clutch with an optimized ratio for given tire size, a 3d manual clutch (basically same as previous, but optimized use of the given ratio), or modifying a transmission from a motorcycle/dirt bike(That is major surgery to cut it off of a engine then modify the crank to be an input shaft(to accept sprockets), aswell as block off and weld the case with plates to make the trans contain oil for operation...)
I'm sure I missed a few items but that's it in a nutshell...

Well it's up to you... But... It's going to mostlikely cost you way more the price of the clutch(you'll have to buy the lever, cable and sprockets separately )than for shipping to India...and it'll probably take 2months...

I think you misunderstand... It may ship in that amount of days... It still takes along while to get there, after that....

Well if that's the case... Why get that... Get a Baker 6 speed big twin transmission from Baker drivetrain...complete with clutch and kickstart...you won't have to worry about much after that...

Oh on a next day with UPS or FEDEX....
If money is no concern...
