Some of you may remember me slightly for having problems with an old painted over rebel flag gokart similar to another members here..

Today I was at my other property and since the pond was so low I saw a gokart frame sticking out of the water, i jumped in and tied a rope around it and pulled it up a 15 foot ledge. Here's some pictures of it before and after.

Its in surprisingly good condition with very little rust, I suspect thats because it has like 3 layers of thick paint on it. And it rolls perfectly.

I assume it got in the pond so deep because some one must have rolled down this huge hill and couldn't stop in time, and went down the cliff into the water, then too lazy to retrieve it. Should be a good project.

To create rust you need three things; metal, moisture & oxygen. being underwater means it's not exposed to the atmosphere so it won't rust but, now that it is & it's really wet, rust will start to form in a matter of days, more than likely on the inside of the tubing; keep an eye on it.

For the same reason, it rolls smooth now but, given a few days, the bearings will likely rust up & sieze.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, just tryin to give you a heads up. All in all, nice find, I hope all works out with it

Wrong. there is those 3 things. there is moisture-water metal-frame oxygen-in the water.

It could have easily rusted. but like he said. lots of paint did protect it. now the bearings should have been toast. must have been some water proof bearings or something.

Technically, you are correct but, due to the lack of atmosphere, it takes much longer.

How many times have you seen sunken planes or ships on doco's in pristine condition after spending decades on the bottom of the ocean? That's due to the lack of atmosphere &, therefore, the lack of oxygen in it. The same wrecks on land would've rusted away years ago

Also salt plays in that factor as well.

Correct. Salt acts as a catalyst to speed up the process but, again, only in the open air, not in the ocean...

It's all very scientific & technical... :lolgoku:

That's just awesome! What're the odds a go-kart nut finds a go-kart hidden sunk in a pond on his property! This is finding it's way into my book/movie!

Name?

I propose Donkegin! (after the pond monster from the Aussie film Frog Dreaming)http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=75Ad795kFSQ

BTW, thread got burried...did you actually find the painted over rebel flag?

nah, just the orange paint like the dukes of hazard and exact frame. I suspect the bottom skid plate where the rebel flag once was, was removed and a thicker piece of steel was placed there. Because the floor plate in that kart didn't seem to be original, as it looks like a piece of oxidized iron/steel that welders would use to practice on.

and it'd be cool to name this "The Flying Dutchman" lol.
