Go-Quad

Here is my latest build. It started as one of those 125cc Chinese Quads, and me being me, it ended as a go-kart. I still need to finish building a full roll cage and add a four point harness, but I've ridden it a few times already (rolled it twice too) and it is now the funnest toy I have in my collection. I got the quad on the night of Thursday the 23rd of April and I had it done (at the stage its at right now) by the following Sunday. The first time I rode it, it rolled it down a steep hill and bruised my cheek bone, and the second time I flipped it at half speed and cracked a rib. I really need to finish the cage, but I ran out of tubing.

If you have any questions or comments, please let me know, I love the input positive or negative.

Also I have a lot of other DIY toys, but this is a go-kart forum, so I didn't post them up, but if there's an interest I'll put them up.

Okay, Here is my "YAMAHA ZUMA" modded into a mini bike

And I'm also working on a motorized mountain bike. It's a small two stroke mated to the stock 7-speed rear end. It's been a pita to build, but should be worth it in the end. I haven't taken any pictures of it (yet) but when I do, I'll put them up too.

I am also working on a Snow-PED, which will be a Go-PED with a track and ski system similar to a snow mobile, but I have put that project on the side burner because I still have a little bit until it's snow season. I'll post pictures of that one as it goes...

Also I have been trying to think of some other fun projects to build so if anyone has any suggestions I would love to hear them. And if anyone has any questions or comments on any of my projects, feel free to ask, and I'll answer them as soon as I go on this site again.

the snow ped sounds cool but what about doing to a snow mobile what you did to the four wheeler (make it in to a go kart)

I'm curious what you're planning to use for the track. I was going to try and build one for a GT but couldn't find anything i like. A snow blower track would probably work but I couldn't get a hold of one.

I've played around with some parts I had laying around and have come up with something I think might work. Basically the body of the track would be bicycle chain wrapped around bike sprockets (also the drive system) with a bike tire (with the bead and sidewall cut off) as the tread. I've come up with a few ideas for how to mate the tread to the chain, but like I said I stopped this project due to the season as well as other projects jumping ahead of it.
What do you mean by a snow blower track?? Aren't those usually a screw??

And as for the snowmobile into a go-kart, that would be really cool, but I don't know too many people with a working snowmobile that they would be willing to get rid of. Wait until the Chinese flood the market with knockoff snowmobiles, and then maybe that might be a possibility. That's what happened with my go-quad, it was a Chinese knock off that someone broke the frame on, so they let me have it.

Some higher quality snow blowers use tank-like tracks instead of wheels to propel them self.

check craigs list so long as you are willing to pay like $300 you can get a good running snowmobile

I have seen them for sale but the issue is that the ones with tracks are more expensive then the conventional ones plus I only really need one track and none of the other parts so I'm not willing to pay that much for it. I think if i do build one it will be similar to zeros only with a an ATV tire with the side walls cut out, or something like that anyway.

how hard was it to make the go-quad.

not too hard. It took me a little under 3 days. If I had a done a bunch of design work and had everything figured out before I got the quad it would have taken a lot less time.
as far as fabrication difficulty goes, I don't find anything like this difficult at all. I've been welding and fabricating for over 10 years, and I've built way more complex things than this. The most difficult thing was finding metal to use...I recycled about 95% of the quad frame and it wasn't enough metal. I had to get creative. I found some left over gas pipe for structural use and one of those folding steel chairs for "non-structural" as well as the seat.
And I need more metal to build a cage, but I found a swing set someone dumped in the hills, so I'm gonna go and grab it. I go back in the hills often, looking for recyclable material, it kills two birds with one stone. It gives me the metal/parts I need and also cleans up the places I love to ride...

If someone wants to convert a quad into a kart, let me know, I will be more than happy to write a step by step set of instructions to do so.

I would love to convert a quad into a kart please post those instructions. BTW thanks. I am new to welding (first time) would recomend i try something else first or is it ok for a newb project. (i khow you said it was easy but you also said you had ten years expeirence.) Thanks in advance.
