Hi guys I'm new to all of this. I got a free frame from a friend, and it's kinda heavy. I just wanted to test it out with a predator 212, which I haven't installed yet. It has the accelerator lever and everything, just not brakes. Would it be safe to test ride without brakes? Or is is just a horrible idea? It seems like it would stop quickly anyway. How fast do you think it would go with a 180lb rider? It's a heavy kart. Also, the brakes seem like the most complicated part of the kart, and the most expensive. If you have any recommendations for a cheap braking system, I would appreciate it. Thanks!

Funny. I had to order more parts for my go kart. Brakes. ThinkIng same thing. Connect throttle and test without brakes? I got some of those cheap brakes bbqjoe is showing.

Ok Hold up Fellas. Those are Converse Chuck Taylor All Stars. Still cool to this day. My Daughter had to have a pair so she could continue to sit at the Cool Kids table. $55.00 Plus tax later I bought her a pair.

Nah just livestream it on YouTube or Facebook.
Anyway, some brakes before you kill yourself. If everything weighs about 500lbs (with driver) you'll want brakes.

Testing without brakes can be done providing you know what you're doing, know what's ahead of you and can plan accordingly.
An easy way to stop is to turn the steering wheel to full lock in either direction. It's especially effective if the kart has a live axle.

maybe ill try the turn and roll method described above i calc max speed at about 27MPH. i should be fine. Yes go pro camera is a must when testing without brakes. its the only way to show other people what not to do when you dont have brakes.

I'm new here, but my first cart was a one wheel peel dad picked up from somewhere. Had no engine or pedals. I guess the pedals stumped the old man, someone gave us an engine, dad rigged up a lawn mower throttle control to the frame about mid thigh. So the throttle was fixed and I had no brakes!
Granted the roads were pretty flat so that's safe! Wasn't allowed to wear my school shoes when I rode it. Had foot brakes, haha

^^^ Back in the day, we youngsters could get away with totally and utterly unsafe practices... and live to see a ripe old age. But nowadays, with everything warning-labeled out the wazoo and basic elementary education in such dire straits, the Darwin Effect is in full play. In fact, stupid people doing stupid things and the celebration of injury and even death is de rigueur. As long as your death is spectacular I guess and you died doing what you loved--it's all good.
If you (the OP) ever come back and make that daunting second post, we can certainly assist you. Post some photos and we can assess your brake setup and make recommendations. A person has to do some serious karting to wear out a typical kart drum, shoes, disc or pads but it's something you don't want to skimp on.
